Hello, I am one of AFC Bournemouth's programme writers and require some views/opinions for a piece which will be going into next Saturday's edition for the match with Charlton.

The article will form the centerpiece of the visitors section and is entitled 'Shirt Tales'. The content will contain a brief description of the Club's shirt/colour history before going onto look at four shirts in detail. They are categorised as History Maker, Classic Cherries, Best Forgotten and Masterpiece.

I have courted opinion on twitter and think that the 1998 Play-Off Final game just eclipses the return to the Valley so the first Le Coq Sportif shirt famed for Clive Mendonca's Wembley hat-trick will be the 'History Maker'.

'Classic Cherries' will be the Yellow Le Coq Sportif away shirt used in 1999-2000. Bournemouth knocked Charlton out of the League Cup on penalties at Dean Court whilst the Addicks were wearing this particular offering.

The two I am struggling with are 'Best Forgotten' and 'Masterpiece'. Straight away my thoughts for 'Best Forgotten' edge towards one of Quasar's ghastly away offerings from the mid 90's, the final third hooped effort particularly bad!

'Masterepiece'. Well a quick look back through your shirt history sees lots of functional shirts, with nothing standing head and shoulders above the rest. I am hoping you Addick's might tell me otherwise though!

If any supporters could be of help, or your Club has a replica expert well known to fans like I am for the Cherries then their input/feedback would be greatly appreciated. I am ideally looking to write the piece tomorrow.

Kind Regards, Gareth Davies.

For me, the masterpiece was the bukta kit of the late 70's

If you contact our programme they do a feature every week on a shirt including some very old ones Olly.groome@cafc.co.uk

Here's a few from the Museum

    imageimageimageimage

The last is a back to the Valley shirt worn on the day we came home so meets your criteria. Olly will have more and better pics
  • Thanks Henry, that's superb. E-mail/tweet to Olly sent! The more opinion the better though so anything posted on this thread will be considered!

"Best forgotten" was absolutely the one you mention Gareth, until this season's third kit abomination...

"Best forgotten" was absolutely the one you mention Gareth, until this season's First kit abomination...

Being a bit of a traditionalist I've fixed that for you mate. Arsenal from the back Boro from the front, red shorts just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid, good job the football takes the mind off it. :-)
  • Masterpiece for me was the Osca kit, 83/84 in red.
Same as the white one above.

Best fprgotren for me was the quaser purple green.
Or any of the Llanera kits, shit moments in our history.

    History maker play off final

  • Masterpiece our Adidas ones in the 80s
For once we didn't have a pikey looking kit and we could look our more illustrious neighbours in the eye on the smart kit front !

Thanks for addition, and I couldn't agree more. I just thought citing two shirts from this season my be a bit much...

Masterpiece - either the late 70s Bukta kits or the early 80s Adidas kits. Home and away on both.

Best forgotten is easily the Carbrini Sportswear abomination from 2008-09. Not only was it god awful, it was worn during one of the worst seasons in recent Addicks memory, ending with relegation to League One.

As you say Callumcafc, best forgotten is that horrendous Joma/Carbrini thing. Looked shite and bad memories of relegation. Not far behind it though must be our Centenary shirt. For such a special occasion surely we must have been able to come up with something better than that. A bad design coupled with a terrible shade of red.

Masterpiece has to be the 1986 Adidas/Woolwich classic. Gotta love the 3 stripes!!!

    Masterpiece:

Quite a break with tradition reversing our primary and secondary colours.

    Best Forgotten:

It's blue and got pinstripes - it could hardly look more millwall. We should never play in blue.

Best forgotten was the away ecru kit on the first season in the prem.

Masterpiece for me was the 96 home, seeing David White's picture recently in it (RIP) reminded me of my early years as a charlton fan and loved those players.

The woolwich shirt with the black collar and white bits on the shoulder has to be the worst, always reminds me of Darren Pitcher
  • Thanks ever so much to everybody who posted on the thread, some very differing views which made the job of picking a 'Masterpiece' and 'Best Forgotten' even tougher although the comments were certainly good for thought!

Had a good chat with Olly Groome who works for Charlton and he was a great help too.

I have come to a decision on the four shirts that will be used in the piece with the finished article in Saturday's programme - the reigning Championship programme of the year and a good read for £3 too if you don't mind me saying!

Safe trip to anybody travelling down on Saturday, it should be a cracking match.

    Regards, Gareth.
