Off to Lisbon tomorrow - any 'must do's' or recommendations? bars, restaurants, museums?

Going to see Benfica tomorrow night at The Stadium of Light, but otherwise have a blank canvas for Saturday, Sunday and most of Monday. have heard about the tram and the 2 hour bus tour.

I'll be reading the guide book at the airport tomorrow morning.

    The old docks (Docas) are lively and good for a meal. There's an Italian (Don Pomodoro) along the end that does superb steaks. A few lively bars too.
    Been there four or five times, lovely City, one of my faves when working away. I went to Benfica and Sporting matches when I was there.
    If you ask the cabbie for Docas, at the drop off point, all the bars etc will be to your right. Enjoy.

    Bairro Alto is a must go area, lots of narrow streets filled with lots of bars, went there for 3 nights and didn't really leave this place.

    I would agree with CHG- Bairro Alto is a good spot. Lots of small bars with cheap drinks and unplanned street parties. A trip to Lisbon is also not complete without trying the "Ginjinha" (cherry brandy shots) on the main square..

    Oh, and the novelty of being openly offered a variety of substances that are illegal here, even whilst eating your dinner, is quite an eye opener!

    take a trip out to Estoril, on the coast, lovely beach if the weather is good

    As a kid I was fascinated by the Belem Tower. I was only five though.

    You used to be able to see it from miles around and my parents used to shut me up by saying see if you can see the water tower soon.

    Get a train to Sintra for the day. World Heritage site. Loads to see. A definite must-do IMHO.

    Brilliant! Similar thing for be Len, but being an Essex boy it was always Benfleet Water Tower or "The Onion" at Basildon Fords.

    Went there this summer for a week and loved it. Go to this bar: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g189158-d4783459-r224918741-Park-Lisbon_Estremadura.html it's on top of car park and has fantastic views over the water, the bridge and the Christ the King statue which is quite a sight at sunset.

    The view from the Christ the King statue is quality as well.

    There's also an abandoned museum in the parque eduardo vii which if you get to go in is really eerie and quite an experience, was the thing I'll remember most about being there.image

    Just flew back from Lisbon yesterday! Weather was lovely and had a great tome with 2 other CAFC fanatics. I would definitely recommend the bus tour (we did the red one but there are others) to get an overview of the city. The castle in Lisbon and that old area are really interesting. Lots of beautiful museums and buildings to see. We spent best part of a day in Belem: the tower, monastery marinas etc. We were recommended a trip to Sintra but didn't have time!

    PS: they are like cobbled streets so wear comfortable shoes!

    Suzi, I have been a couple of times over the years, but the first time I stayed in a youth hostel and met a load of great characters from across the world including one fella who was there to "study" at the Circus School.

    He took us all up there one afternoon and we got to see all the performers trying different things. Dance, mime, acrobatics - we got to have a go on the high wire (it was actually 2 ft off the ground for training), try out Diablo, and various other great things. They then sat us all down for lunch and, as it sits up high in the city you have great views.

    Have just checked and it is still operating. It's been a while, but sounds like it is still worth it looking at this review.

    I'd agree also with the train ride up to Estoril and Cascais. Takes about 40 minutes to the latter (if I remember right) and there are some great sights, bars, cafes and a huge casino at Estoril too.
