'He may just be poorly advised and drunk on his own arrogance, straying into news business area that he doesn't fully understand'. Classic.ValleyMick said:@VFF
Interesting theory. Should be clearer once the window closes. If we lose say TBH and Buyens, there are few quality additions to the squad, Luzon doesn't add to the back room team and the club doesn't bring in any advisors with Championship experience- this will support the argument that Roland is happy to play the odds and risk relegation.
If he is willing to take this risk than as a rational businessman he'll have thought through the pros and cons. Your suggested logic is as good as any.
Alternatively he may just be poorly advised and drunk on his own arrogance, straying into a new business area that he doesn't fully understand. In business for every Branson there's a Ratner.
I can't call it at the minute.
So conspiracy or incompetence then. Maybe a mixture of the two with a healthy dose of under investment. It is not a receipe for challenging for the premiership in either case.1 -
Interesting view but at some point he's going to have to invest. We're no use to him as a yo yo team between The Championship and League One. The club will lose money that way. Even selling the odd young player wouldn't counteract that.vff said:vff earlier
From the way, Duchatelet is going about business, I don't think he really bothered as a Charlton as a viable Championship outfit. If Charlton have seasons as a Championship club, that is probably seen as a bonus. It takes too much investment to establish Charlton in the higher level of the Championship.
I think he has a plan B for Charlton as a League One outfit. Duchatelet can still develop the academy and League One is a more natural fit for all the network players not good for Liege and a better step up in level from his other network clubs. The Championship is a tough league and needs a strong team spirit, that needs a high level of investment, a strong manager / head coach with autonomy (who is able to speak up and be listened to) and the loose arrangements of fitting in players from the network does not foster that. The current Duchatelet model is the opposite of what's needed. It may be possible to get away with that set up in League One.
Jolly Red Robin
So how comes it works at Watford?
vff: to @JollyRobin :
Possibly because Watford are prepared to pay the going rate for wages in the Championship, and are sending over a better quality of player in the first place ?0 -
Except that a Championship club will be far more attractive to the young talent we want to attract. This division is full of decent clubs with nice grounds and pitches, L1 is far less appealingvff said:vff earlier

I don't think it is likely he would be relaxed about relegation. He will want to stay up. However, he will most likely underestimate the damage it would do to go down and the difficulty of getting back, because how could he have any understanding of that?
The only evidence is what happened last time and I think it would be much worse.15 -
I cannot for one minute see that he would think a team being relegated would make good business sense.ValleyMick said:@VFF

So am I the only one to be clinging onto the hope that he doesn't get the permit? It's eerily quiet.4

someone posted on the facebook Charlton group that the work permit id to be confirmed tomorrow with a 1pm press conference - think (and hope!) he is wrong as don't we usually have a presser on Thursdays?0

Let's hope it goes a bit better than the last press conference. Shambles.sammy391 said:someone posted on the facebook Charlton group that the work permit id to be confirmed tomorrow with a 1pm press conference - think (and hope!) he is wrong as don't we usually have a presser on Thursdays?

Exactly! Unless he's spent the week watching videos of the Championship and having English lessons, how could it possibly get any better?killerandflash said:

I hope that it was not Luzon suggesting that Charlton play a high line with slow defenders in the back line (such as Bikey) like happened at Watford. I hope who ever suggested that, with the current pace in the defence, never does that again.0
-
Damian said he was acting on Luzon's instructions, at least part of the time against Watford.
I am assuming Watford was 100% down to Luzon, as I assume Wolves will be 100% down to Luzon, if not Luzon, then Duchatelet.1 -
Maybe there's a cooling off period.soapboxsam said:I assume he's been on a lovely sunny beach in Israel, since leaving Standard.
now he's in cold, damp Bexleyheath and looking forward to gettingPeetersPelters before h/t
against Rotherham if we've not taken the lead.(the Wolves game shouldn't count)
The word on the street is saying he has found a young flemish lawyer and is reading the small print to see if there's
a get out clause within the first 14 days.
Or maybe I'm mixing it up with buying a Timeshare.
Actually, the "network" IS a bit like the Timeshare concept.
You buy, then, by means of "banking" your purchase into a "pool", you proceed to borrow another from said pool..... ad infinitum.
Sound familiar ?

To be fair, as soon as it went 2-0, we seemed to drop back and it didn't exactly go any better!vff said:I hope that it was not Luzon suggesting that Charlton play a high line with slow defenders in the back line (such as Bikey) like happened at Watford. I agree that it does not appear to make good business sense. The strategy does seem insane on a business level. Yet all those things are happening. What does the evidence point to ? What other conclusions can Charlton supporters arrive at ?ElfsborgAddick said:

The football decisions make sense on one level for saving money but not in having a successful football strategy. Luzon as manager for a team, when at least 3 of the team have fallen out with him and those players have been moved sideways to that team to escape him ? The probable result will be that those players will be looking to move from that team.
Liege supporters did warn us that Duchatelet makes baffling football decisions. Duchatelet, I think knows the price of everything but the value of nothing. It may just be hubris. I definitely don't rule out general incompetence.

Luzon on a surface level makes some short term sense on an accountancy level as Luzon is twiddling his thumbs at Carl Zeiss Jena so why not use him ? Doesn't speak the language, players don't like him, crowd don't want him and he doesn't know the Championship. Good on an accountancy level but a very poor footballing decision.
The other constant seems to be, where Duchatelet can possibly get a cheaper player for a position, then he will. Instead of Hamer and Alnwick, we now have Henderson (good keeper but injury prone) and Etheridge. Onewyu instead of Morrisson etc.
The Championship needs a squad with depth and quality. Charlton definitely don't have that. It is more of a Doncaster type squad when they were briefly in the Championship (some quality but short on depth, same socks). It would have been touch and go for the Duchatelet strategy with an effective FFP but that's gone now. I don't think that Dutchatelet philosophically wants to spend money as that doesn't fit into the vision. There does appear to be a danger that when the income drops in league one, that further Duchatelet reductions in budget may happen.
Not what Charlton supporters want, but its Duchatelet spending the money and he may have come to the conclusion that Charlton has to be run at a League One level. If he has decided this, he is unlikely to share it. Katrien Meire let slip about the pitch being funded by the Kermogant sale. He is definitely not going to tell the supporters / customers what the plan is. The supporters appear to be incidental (unless they complain / protest and then it is to keep them quiet with a short term fix). The Roland strategy is either a deliberate strategy or incompetence. One or the other. I am currently leaning towards Duchatelet being a mixture of hubris and incompetence with inexperience of the world of football.
The only person knowing what is going on in Duchatelet's brain is Duchatelet himself. We are only likely to find that out by his actions.7 -
Unless lessons are quickly learnt, and these people don't take advice (as Riga appeared to do) then I am concerned about the outcome of the Wolves game. I am not holding my breath that Duchatelet or Luzon will actually take advice. If Luzon did suggest that Charlton play a high line, knowing how slow Bikey is, then that is an ominously bad start.seth plum said:Damian said he was acting on Luzon's instructions, at least part of the time against Watford.

Lets hope the visa application hits a snag (and the rumours of it being granted are incorrect). I am worried though about Duchatelet running the team selection from his office in Belgium. I fear that he is that much of a misguided megalomanic to think he can do that.0 -
