    Thanks Colin. Is that confirmed?

I'll give him a cheer. He was a great player for us. Not such a good manager.
If we win do you think he will do the tunnel jump for old times sake.

Yeah, not so good - only secured promotion with a record equalling points total and then kept us up with a relatively small budget.

There were bumps along the way, but the fact is Powell's time at Charlton was his first proper management job and, even now, he's been managing for less than 5 years. Who is perfect from the word go?

If Powell can be considered as not so good, then we have been blighted by not so good managers for much of the club's existence
  • Remember back in the day writing an article for the Voice suggesting applause for the returning former captain, Peter Shirtliff.

Pleased to say this happened as his goals v Leeds probably kept the club going.

He deserves an applause before and after the game.

During the game he's the opposition manager, nothing more.

    Spot on

Probably the closest I'll come to flagging anyone without doing so

You sir, are a tool. Did you ever see the man PLAY for Charlton? Did you ever meet the man? Have you heard any of the stories of what he has done for not only football but those involved in football and even those not. Were you sleeping for the entire season we walked League One with a record points tally?

Also did he get us relegated? No, he did not. Maybe he would have, maybe he wouldn't have, but the FACT is he didn't, those that use him 'almost relegating us' as something against him is laughable.

As DMC has just said, Charlton is more than a Football Club, you obviously can't grasp that - anyone and everyone involved with Chris Powell's time at Charlton in it's entirety won't have a bad word to say about him, that you can't respect him says more about you than him.

End of Rant. Look forward to seeing him again, I hope we win on Saturday but look forward to what fight CP will put in his players for this one.
    it's not though is it.
  • I don't get all this powell is not a good manager comments. Such a bad manager winning the league with record points.

Hmmm we spent Cash's cash and had a squad that would have been competitive in the Championship so we should have been there or thereabouts.
As I said he's a top fella I'll give him a cheer but he ain't exactly Curbs is he?

But was this during the game? Which was the key point here

A complete Charlton legend who had my absolute support when a player here and manager. However, he's coming here with a different badge on his chest, so a warm applause as he arrives at his dugout and as he leaves it after is enough imo. This 3rd minute round of applause is waaaay over the top. Hes already had one of them as it is!!!

Why not? 41% win ratio as a Charlton manager is a lot better than most (a very respectable win ratio at a club like ours - under tough situations). I believe Mick McCarthy has pretty much the exact same win ratio at Ipswich and most consider him a success. This includes his time in League One football but it's not as if we were setting that League alight pre-Powell.

I'm not saying he's the best manager in the world, but far from the worst - what do people expect when we get promoted from League One!? Comfortable mid-table and then get promoted? There's way too many bigger teams in the league for us to do that, we have to be reasonable. Without Powell we could well STILL be in League One, so again, ALMOST* relegating us is laughable, imo.

    *key word

No he was not but given time I think he could of been.

A lot of managers spend money that's the easy bit what cp did was more than that in my opinion.

    Charlton
    01 Hamer
    05 Morrison
    06 Taylor
    16 Wiggins
    20 Solly
    04 Jackson
    08 Stephens
    11 Wagstaff
    22 Hollands
    10 Wright-Phillips
    36 Kermorgant
    13 Sullivan
    28 Cort
    18 Pritchard
    14 Haynes
    17 Euell

Our squad last day of the season of League One.

Would say 8/9 (at a push) of that 16 could be 'competitive' players in the Championship. And that's partly thanks to the work Powell has done with them, Kermorgant was 5x the players leaving us than he was leaving Leicester (confidence zapped), etc.

But we'll agree to disagree. I believe last season's tough ride is clouding over Powell's managerial successes as a whole, people forget the season before, obviously. :- )

    WE LOVE YOU COLIN......
  • I haven't felt so positive about a Charlton squad for years. I don't want us to be part of a Euro network and I'm indifferent about Luzon as an individual.

I'll clap CP on and off the field but that's it. The rest of the time will be about the team and the club. We have a chance to build some real positive momentum and I wouldn't want us to jeopardise that via some OTT gesture during the game.

I'm not going to try and dissuade you from your view mate but let's not forget he wanted to strengthen and build on the first season 9th position finish in the Championship mindful of SSS (second season syndrome). He had identified players to improve the side further but the finance rug was pulled from under him and we ended up with bargain basement signings up front in Church and Sordell.

He was well and truly shafted by the chuckle brothers and further shafted by Roland's modus operandi. We'll never know if he'd have kept us up or not it is all pure conjecture. He couldn't work under Roland's ideology that's for sure and was better off out of it. And before anyone says Riga succeeded where Powell failed, well actually he also refused to play the Network misfits and was so well thought of by RD by keeping us up with CP's team, he wasn't given the gig at the start of this season!

I'll cheer Powell when he first steps out the tunnel - then spend the rest of the game hoping we win 3-0, again. What he did for us is admirable but that was then, this is now, I won't cheer any other team's manager during a game against them. Ever.

Since 11th March last year many fans have not really felt a proper sence of closure and when SCP comes on Saturday and says goodbye to the fans and the fans say goodbye to him it will feel like a sence of closure to the SCP period. At least for now LOL ;).

As for the 3rd minute it sounds a little strange doing it for the opposing gaffer but I'm sure many will do it and I will certainly join in. And before and after the game as well. Maybe after the game it will be like when Lampard returned to Chelsea when he milked the applauds while alone on the pitch. SCP will do the same.

This 100%, the only compromise would be to have ex Managers/ head coach day.
As 99.9 of you should be CAFC fans ?
You only clap if you rated them or respect what they gave to the club.

    Chris Powell 3rd min(shirt)
    Guy Luzon 39 (age)
    Bob Peeters 41(age)
Jimmy Seed 47 ( can't be CAFC fan if you don't know why)
    Iain Dowie 50(age)
    Alan Pardew 53(age)
Curbs + Riga 57 (age) may have to go into added time+ 58 min
    Lennie Lawrence 67(age)
    Theo Foley 77 (age)
    Eddie Firmani 81(age)

Only 11 so far but gives you an idea was we should do.

At least this will be one way to get some of you on your feet !

Don't remember Lennie Lawrence getting the same treatment when he came back or Curbishley for that matter.

The 3rd minute thing is the most cringeworthy thing I have seen suggested.

If our form hadn't picked up in the last couple of weeks, this would have been my first voluntarily missed home game for several years. It would have been painful to witness the fawning and it would have been a million times worse had we still been winless since November.

Do the hero worship thing if you want, I won't be doing anything other than a couple of claps pre-match.

You'd rather not witness Charlton play than see people applaud an ex- England international and title winning manager for Charlton.

    Weird.

And you're only coming because we've picked up form? Bit fairweather...

What's weirder is that you think people would have just been applauding had we still been winless.

It would have been ramped up to a level of cringeworthyness that I want no part of.

    Why?

Why does our current form affect what Chris Powell has previously done for us as a Football Club (and man?) Some people really are strange!

The bit I have a problem with and I doubt I am alone in this is the whole 'during the game' bit. By all means applaud him before the game, and if you want to, after the game too. But applauding a man who will be fully out to beat us during the match? How will that help? Will it be any more meaningful than those of us who thanked him, sincerely, before the game and acknowledged he will always be a true Charlton legend? Of course it won't. Curbs wasn't cheered during his first game back and he did more for this club than Powell ever did.

But that's what happened. Riga had the same squad as Powell. But Riga kept us up. Powell picked the team, ignoring the owners recommendations, that tapped out in embarrassing fashion in the cup Quarter v the Blades.
Powells team played hoofball to Yann every bloody game, it was dire.
I think those that have donned the rose tinted spectacles need to remove them and take a look at the table when Powell left and 5 matches after Riga took over.
By all means give him a cheer (I will) but please try to leave it there any more would be a bit sad TBH.
