Setting up my other half with an account on my laptop, however, it goes through the set up stage (loading apps, nearly done messages etc) then it just goes blank and we don't get the desktop/icons screen...any advice?

    Not quite
Windows Vista beats it and in comparison to Windows ME it's the best o/s ever released

    Its definitely shite though

I hate it. Has the release date for 10 been confirmed yet?

Windows 8 succeeded at making all the uncomplicated things complicated, which was a fair achievement. I look forward to seeing if they can top it with 10.

Windows 8 was an attempt at an o/s for PC/lap top/phone/tablet/bananna basically everything and it failed.

Stick with 7. Had a brief gander at a developers copy of 10 and it looks more like a conventional Windas o/s desktop (and I hate Windas!!!).So wait for that.

Windows 8 is the most efficient windows OS. We can all jump on the bandwagon and pretend it's terrible but it just isn't.

Opinions are like arseoles mate and people vote with their feet. You can have the most efficient o/s on the planet but if it also makes it unusable to the majority of its core userbase, ie; the punters, then whats the feckin point?

Most important thing is that you use the administrator account.

It has one difference, a different start screen. That's it. Love it or hate it, it's otherwise better in every single way (vs win7)

You clearly haven't tried to use it in a work (enterprise) environment then. It is shocking in every way imaginable. Nightmare to add group policies to anything, imaging devices is a joke - have to go through a whole heap of grief to get the BIOS to boot from a USB etc etc etc.

    Utter cack.

It was obviously designed with touch screen at the front of people's minds but to be honest it is crap in that respect as well.

    Windows 7 is far superior.

Pretty sure the BIOS has nothing to do with Windows

The stupid UEFI (bios) firmware which causes all the problems is very definitely Windows 8.

Not true. The UEFI BIOS is a standard developed by dozens of oems, software vendors and industry bodies. It was brought about by the need for a more secure way of booting Systems prior to the O/S - but, in common with most collaborative initiatives, has resulted in a complete dog's dinner.

And Windows 8 is an absolute arsehooe of an operating system. It is not 'the most efficient operating system' ever released - it's a touchscreen o/s that wasn't thought through properly for the desktop

I backed up to External Drive and restored to factory settings in the end.

An upgrade to Windows 10 is available free of charge to 7 & 8 users for the first year after it's introduced. Wonder if it will be better?
