Help needed from VINYL lovers

Hi

Long-term fan and very infrequent poster asking for a favour here

I’m currently doing my thesis on the impact of changes in technology on the vinyl record industry (particularly Discogs) and was hoping that some of you might be OK to do a survey (based on the fact that the old skool house thread seemed pretty popular).

http://cass.eu.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_0iAwBmaS0Orxn6d

It should take about 5 mins of your time and if you have a Discogs account, you'll get 10% off any of the records I’m selling there by putting your username at the end.

Cheers

Ralph

  • Done.

Used to love vinyl and was a regular buyer.
Sadly, I got older and with family & work commitments, I no longer have the time for the 'bedroom DJ' scene.

I've got a garage full of vinyl all to be transferred to MP3 format, but no time for that, either.
So it's streaming for me nowadays
  • Are you asking about my Vera?

Thanks for that Phantom User - really appreciate it

Interesting what you say - there seem to be two trends going on at the moment. The one that you're talking about - people finding vinyl too impractical and moving onto mp3s and streaming

The other one is people rebelling against the whole "digitisation" process and reverting back to vinyl - look at the rise in vinyl sales recently:

By the way - what's the vinyl you have in your garage? electronic stuff?

1 day, I would love to get the decks set up again.
Have played around with various Apps for mixing streamed music, but it's just not the same.
It's not physical enough, I guess.

In the garage there are plenty of genres, but mainly dance tunes from the late 80's early 90's and 00s.
House, Rap, Hip House and... erm.. garage.
Basically all the tunes, commercial and underground, that were enjoyed as a regular club goer, DJ and p*sshead

    Done for you.

I worked in an independent record shop from '86 - '92 as a Saturday/holiday lad. The best job I've ever had.

That's right! They want a "practical aspect" as well so trying to combine it with the Discogs account

    Thanks for your help

I took a large box of albums off a mate, as he was emigrating. Jesus, he had such a shit taste in music. Mainly stuff like 70's prog & Abba. As they were all original editions and still in good nick, I thought they might be worth a few quid.........seems not
  • I've completed it but I'm not really into music if I'm honest but I guess it takes all sorts.

Done - I collect vinyl seven inches. I frame them and put them on my wall. They look great.

I love the sound of vinyl but the convenience and cheapness of mp3s and streaming mean I'm never likely to go back.

Got a new Stanton turntable from the wife (to sit alongside my Pioneers) for Christmas and have been spending hours on Discogs since. Managing to pick up some incredible house records for as little as 75 cents.

Loads of mid 90's soulful house stuff that I'd forgotten about or simply missed first time around....sounding like an incredibly old fart but they don't make them like that any more.

I've got a lot of vinyl and one day (probably when I retire and am too old to enjoy listening to it) I'll transfer them all onto the computer.

Then again will probably never get round to it.

Mid 90's soulful house you say. The best kind

I have been meaning to do the same but it's all on download.

I've got loads of dance vinyl that I need to shift. Is discogs the best place? Or ebay?

Really wasn't expecting such a great response. Thanks for your help – being a Charlton fan’s pretty rough at times but at least I know we help each other out!

@Danny Addick I've been selling a lot on Discogs for the last 3 years. If you send me a PM, I can give you some tips...

The general idea is that if it's well known, go for ebay.. if it's more specialist... Discogs is your best option (but you'll need to be more patient).

e.g. sold a version of Massive Attack's Mezzanine on ebay for £80 when it would have only got around £40 on Discogs. But, tried selling some random Deep House tunes on ebay and had no luck, so stuck with Discogs. Also - fees for ebay are 10% (they take 10% of your vinyl price and p&p), whereas Discogs is 8% (and they don't take fees on the p&p)

End of the day, 95% of my sales have been through Discogs, but if you've got some classics, put them up on ebay.
