I thought it was about recreational drugs, but I understand its about Richard Ashcrofts mother who had cancer.

Incorrect. When Lou Reed wrote song about heroin they were called things like "heroin" and mentioned sticking a spike into his vein.Lincsaddick said:Perfect Day .. Lou Reed's love song to heroin
Perfect Day is about a day in the park with his wife drinking sangria and then watching a film. Source: his wife2 -

I think the Vapours denied turning Japanese was about having a wank, but I think they did it at a joke as their explanation of what it was about was rubbish. Jerusalem is a good example as the establishment have adopted it, but the lyrics from Blake are about a Socialist Utopia - although relevant to a different time. People call for it to be the national anthym but it is far from a nationalistic hymn.0

I see there are direct quotes here, and the band guys ought to know, but hmmm. These are the lyrics, and still to me they're about heroin addiction, but OK maybe I see too much in it.
"Hotel California"
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain,
"Please bring me my wine"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine"
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis
Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device"
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
"Relax, " said the night man,
"We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave! "

I always thought they were singing about harvesting pineapples, but yeah, if the tree was their phallus and they got their hands round it, gotta be about having a sherman.1

The Undertones - It's Gonna Happen
I always thought it was another 'boy fails to meet girl' pop song, but I found out recently it was about the IRA Hunger Strikers and was a sly dig at the British establishment.
Totally changed my view of the song.
As for Hotel California, I had a friend at Uni from the USA who swore up and down it was about Satanism and that the Eagles were well known in certain circles as being into all sorts of occult stuff, raising spirits, seances and dark arts. She also went through the lyrics pointing out lyrics such as 'we have'nt had that spirit here since 1969'. I never agreed, but then again, I could'nt definately say it was wrong either.0 -
I dont think that is correct.ken_shabby said:The Undertones - It's Gonna Happen

The undertones played TOTP on the day Bobby Sands died and one of the band (Damian I think) wore a black armband but the song itself isn't about the hunger strikes.

Its going to happen - happen - till your change your mind
Its going to happen - happen - happens all the time
Its going to happen - happen - till your change your mind
Best story I ever heard
The truth about fat Mr X and the young girl
See how far he'll let you go
Before he persuades you when you're walking home
Happens all the time ...
Watching your friends passing by
Going to sleep without blinking a blue eye
Too slow to notice what's wrong
Two faced to you when you're taking them on
Happens all the time ...
Everything goes when you're dead
Everything empties from what was in your head
No point in waiting today
Stupid revenge is what's making you stay
Its going to happen - happen - till your change your mind
Nothing about the IRA0 -
Come on Henry, have you never heard of imagery? It does'nt actually mention the IRA by name, but that does'nt really prove anything. The song Enola Gay bu OMD never actually named Hiroshima or Atoic weapons, but that was what it was about. The song Seconds by the Human league never actually mentioned President Kennedy, or the man who killed him, but that was what it was about. This one is a tougher call, but simply serving up the lyrics is'nt really here nor there.1

OK, Enola Gay the song named the plane that dropped the bomb the "Enola Gay" so no confusion there.ken_shabby said:Come on Henry, have you never heard of imagery? "All day, hiding from the sun
Waiting for the golden one
Waiting for your fame
After the parade has gone
Outside was a happy place
Every face had a smile
Like the golden face
For a second
Your knuckles white
As your fingers curl
The shot that was heard
Around the world for a second"
Pretty clear that is about killing someone. Doesn't say it is Kennedy but it is a fair guess
So where in "it's gonna happen" do they reference the IRA or the hunger strikes? They lyrics are about something else. It's only because they were on TOTP that day and Damian wore a black armband that the two are linked. It just happened to be that single they were promoting.
