Alan Curbishley

  • it took Curbishley a long time to achieve what he did at Charlton. He knows that in the contemporary game if there is no success for a manager after a month or so, the sack is a more than likely outcome.
Curbishley is not poor, he is a very clever and astute man. I suspect that he knows that his style of long term, strategic management is no longer suited to the game that he still loves. He neither wants nor needs the hassle. Curbishley is ok as a TV pundit and I wish him all the best in that role

Surely a decent manager and as you say an astute man can adapt to that??

Only way he'll manage a premiership team now is if he promotes one.

Have always had the impression with him that he's not been too interested in getting back in the game since West Ham.

He always stated, although it may have changed now, that he had earned the right to manage at Premiership level and would only consider managing a Premiership club, that along with the legal case against West Ham hindered any prospects of managing at the highest level. he was offered the job at Wolves in their relegation season, but they would only offer him an end of season contract and he wanted (rightly) more than that.

Yes, I agreed with him totally with the Wolves position.

A shame that he never got the adulation afforded to Powell.

cant be too many managers that can say that 2 of their former signings (Powell & Rowett) are now successful managers themselves

If you manage for as long as he has(d), you're bound to manage future managers. Pardew and Redfearn as well, plus coaches like Robson, Kinsella, Kiely, Euell etc

Well he hardly had the personality to receive the affection from the fans that Powell did. He didn't court adulation, he did a professional job. He was undemonstrative and his deadpan and uninspiring post match interviews were legendary. He loved football more than he did Charlton.
Powell on the other hand had forged an affectionate relationship with the crowd in his three spells as a player, something Curbs never did.
Adulation is a two way emotion, you have to give to receive.

Comparisons to Powell need to be in context. He was a white knight in a dark time for the club. The heart had disappeared and he brought it back. Curbs gave us an incredible period and was hugely popular for it. But Powell's love stemmed from a different story.

not really you said you would have him back in a flash, so I just wondered why
I mean its not like Luzon has done anything wrong, if we was managerless I would agree
  • I'm guessing that he meant hypothetically if the job was available, not right now.

I don't think he means get him in now, it's all hypothetical..............he's not Roly!!!! he doesn't have the final say.

You probably are calm, just chucking up responses like 'Hope you can back a comment like that up' comes across differently.

i'd take Curbs if we had normal owners (but we dont) because i believe over the course of a season or 3 he'd be better than Guy
but this freaky set up is best for someone who understands how it works , step forward Guy of Luzon

To clarify - if Charlton were without a manager I would be extremely pleased to have Curbs back. I am currently happy with Guy and he has my full support.....and breathe!
  • Luzon has done well, but if it was up to me and I was asked whether to remove Luzon and replace him with Curbs tomorrow, I'd say go for it.
