What is the purpose of super cups?

Whether it be the UEFA Super Cup or domestic super cups, what purpose (other than serving as a curtain raiser for the season) do they serve? Should they be abolished (as they can lead to unnecessary injuries)?

    The community shield raises money for charity. As for the others - they have the same point as any other sporting trophy if it comes down to the nitty gritty, none whatsoever. It's entertainment, if Charlton were taking part, most of us would pay to be there.
