  • One thing Les Reid said that stuck in my mind was that young players learn more training with top PL teams than playing in the lower divisions. Obviously playing will improve him too, but going to Liverpool is a good move for him both financially and professionally. Good luck to the lad.

I hope because a) not good enough and b) too expensive. I would only have kept TBH.

Personally I don't want Gomez back on loan. I want to see him playing for his new club at centre half in the prem league and champs league. England are poor at centre half and I would love to see him represent England at next years Euro's. I think it will be a year to early for him but I believe he will be an England regular in 2yrs.

Playing devil's advocate here .. forget the emotions that Cousins and Gomez are 'ones of our own' .. IF they were both sold for (say) around £9/10 million, that would buy us five or six hardened, talented, experienced, proven championship players and could be the start of a very successful era for the club. I think we know that the owner is not going to splash too much of his own/network money on new players, but he will probably loosen the purse strings if a BIG sum was forthcoming from player sales

We all know Roly doesn't go down that road!
Really? Roger Johnson, Chris Eagles, Tal Ben Haim, add to that the quality of Tony Watt and JBG, and it kind of pisses on your fireworks.
    Released, released, released.
    What ? We've weleased Woger ?

Yeah yeah I know, I was answering Green With Envys statement that RD does not bring in experience players, try and keep up. So RD does know what he's doing re The Championship

Would Liverpool or Arsenal loan him out to Hull or Stoke? No he would be loaned to a Championship team and why wouldn't that be CAFC. He will want to be happy with how his new club are going to give him the experience he needs before stepping up to compete in the premiership. So can't see him going anywhere that doesn't involve a loan back negotiated in advance. If it's not CAFC I can only believe that's Joe's choice, not the buying club's decision.
    Hull are in the championship

Are you ok in the head?

I only ask as you are desperately unfunny yet you continue.
  • No I am not but thank you for taking time to ask, I hit my head very hard this morning and there's blood in my ear and watery stuff leaking from my nose

Is that normal at this time of year

Agreed, but he still signed several of those when we were looking good for relegation and us fans were complaining about not having enough championship players. Maybe RD has finally learnt something about this division?

I am at odds on the Gomez saga. Half of me says stay but the other half says that a potential £8m for an 18 year old with approx 20 games under his belt is a good deal (However, I would like more especially as Liverpool will be getting as much as £10m per match season)

I really hope Joe can do better than Liverpool, I'd be disappointed if he didn't go to a top 4 side, as he will be England material in the future, I know he's not played a lot of games in the scheme of things, but we should be looking for £10 million upfront with 2.5 million in add one, a 20% sell on fee, if Liverpool play hardball then drop the 2.5 million add ones, and have him playing for Charlton for another season.

Don't get screwed over this one Charlton.

Gomez is the best youngster Charlton have produced in decades. No-one who has watched him since he came into the U-18's as a 15-year-old will disagree. Anything we get now will be a pittance compared to what his value will be in 3/4 years time. He is happy here too, so I will be extremely disappointed to see him go right now. I hope if he does go it will be to Arsenal, who have an ethos of bringing through young players properly.

And Arsenal are a Club who have previously loaned us the likes of Song, Coquelin and the not so good Frimpong. Whereas Liverpool made noises when we sold Shelvey to them about loaning us having a tie up and loaned us just Nathan Eccleston, a 24 year old striker who has now the grand total of eight career goals to his name from just 79 appearances and languishing at Kilmarnock.

This is how the propaganda of this Liverpool tie up was delivered:

Liverpool will pay Charlton an initial £1.7m, with the remainder of the fee subject to appearances and performance-related targets at domestic and international level. Charlton have also inserted a clause into the deal whereby Liverpool will loan players to them next season. "As part of the potential transfer," a statement on the Charlton official website said, "the two clubs are in talks to develop a strategic partnership involving the development of players in both directions."

This is a school of thought, but I'm not convinced I completely agree with it. Somebody like Alex Pritchard, I imagine, has benefitted far more by playing a full season with Brentford than he would have done playing in Spurs' U21s and training with the first team. If he is referring to Southampton's academy players, I suggest that it is an unusually high quality crop that they have brought through, not that they shouldn't be given credit for it. Being able to mould youngsters who are instantly ready for the first team suggests that their coaching is outstanding.

    From the BBC:

'Liverpool hope to finalise a deal for Charlton teenager Joe Gomez later this week, with the 18-year-old scheduled to undergo a medical on Friday, according to Press Association Sport.

It is understood the Anfield club have triggered a £3.5m release clause in the England Under-19 international's contract which has paved the way for the move to be completed and he will meet with club officials on Merseyside on Friday.'

    Release clause explains a lot...

maybe it was the best we could get him to agree to. If we had insisted on say 6m then he may not have signed his last contract.
