Well Done Mr Varney and best of luck for the future, you've been someone thats been at the forefront of the good things this club have done in recent years and shall be sorely missed. Big shoes to fill.

I've come far too late to this, but he is only "an ageing chief executive" ;-)

Seriously - I've only met him once, but what I remember most about him is getting a personal reply from him over the fiasco when we planned to play Franchise FC in a friendly about five years ago. The club rightly backtracked on it, and I've always had enormous respect for him since that day - if I had to deal with the amount of sh*t he's had to take from fans over the years I'd have gone postal a long while ago. A top football boss (and there aren't many of them) and a good man. Good luck to him.

NIce work Prague addick, didnt shock me that he replied to that message, nice touch for him as some of the messages to him on this thread are very heartfelt.

Apart from bumping into Mr Varney with ketters after Reading away last season i only have one story of coming accross, it wasnt actually me, but my girlfriend at the time. She wanted to get me the cream mesh kit when it first come out for whatever reason (shag anniversary probably!!) but when she slogged over there from welling it was shut for a 'Stock take!'. Peed orf she marched over to the main entrance, stormed into it, and there he was mr varney btw she hadnt a clue who he was, so she blasted him about the shop being shut in the middle of the day and asked what he was going to do about it! She said he very quickly reassured her that she would have the first one when it came in as they were also out of stock, got some charlton paper and wrote me a letter saying i have a shirt on the way!!
When she told me it was Mr Varney i thought he is a top man.

Wierd story but i thought i would share it here, as he will be missed by me. A few have used the same sentance as i wanted to use whan i heard of his departure,
and that is just simply 'I am gutted' !!!

    Good luck Dude

I think if I was Peter Varney and I was reading these fans' comments and if I heard the crowd singing my name at a game, then I think I would know that I had done a great job, that it had been recognised by my fellow supporters and I would be rightly proud of my achievements at the club.
I have met him a couple of times, and he was always ok to me, even if he was not always quite sure how to take me/us! I can still recall his face when the VFR choir sang on the pitch and he was rather concerned that we would turn to the away support and tell them to go forth and multiply!
But the are glowing testimonials on this thread from people who know him and have worked with him show the true measure of the man and his dedication to the club has clearly been immense.
So thanks Peter for all the work you have done for the team I support. I hope the vocal response you get today from us shows you just how much it has been appreciated.

Well done to the two blokes behind me (M Block) who tried to get everyone singing "There's only one Peter Varney". Unfortunately no one would join in. Perhaps it would have been different if the team had turned up yesterday.

Coming to this late as well. Peter Varney was on our coach for the first subsidised away day at Port Vale. I can't remember whether he was stewarding or just another passenger, but when we got there someone was jobsworthing about the coach parking and he sorted them out in no time at all. I got the distinct impression that he wasn't someone that you ought to cross unless you were totally sure of your ground, but he clearly had the good of the club at heart, and I think we will have trouble replacing him.
  • As one of the
there is only 1 Peter Varney singers on Saturday

we tried and failed i even had someone ask me who is Peter Varney what a crock of shite there must be a way of us getting that sung before the last game of Varneys Tenure

Just managed to read all these. Very disappointing news.

Good luck Mr Varney and thanks for all the hard work over the years.

Dont know him but i experienced one of my most toe curling embarrassing faux pas's and hopefully he will never be asked about a neglected fanny ever again. I doubt he ever will.

It's not as bad as it sounds - bloody funny though!

It was the last question of the night at City Addicks, several Magners had been consumed by Curb_It and Franny Jeffers was being left out of the squad by Curbs. The question was supposed to be along the lines of "Is our Franny feeling neglected?" but came out as "Is our FANNY feeling neglected?". Needless to say, the meeting was quickly called to a close!
