External hard drive...
So it turns out the Mrs uses it and just unplugs the thing, instead of safely removing it! Ffs!
Now says it has to format it, and will delete all files. I've got years worth of stuff on it! Does anyone know a way, apart from paying PC World £80 to retrieve docs??!

From a photography forum I frequent, this applies to lost photos on a compact flash card, not sure if it'll work with a HDD but worth a try?
Some freebie programs which may help you recover the photos ( be aware , though , that because of the size of the card it could take several hours to complete ) :
http://www.pcinspector.de/Default.htm?language=1 ( if the page shows in German , there's an option on the top right to select English )
http://www.wisecleaner.com/wise-data-recovery.html
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
http://www.undelete360.com/
http://www.piriform.com/recuva
The usual problem is that the flash-card's file table has become corrupted.
A low-level format usually repairs it , but will also delete any files on the card ( meaning you'll have to use one of the above programs to recover them )
Another option , though , is to use 'TestDisk' ( http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk ) to repair or replace the card's FAT without formatting it.0 -
