If Channel 5 are open to ideas, they do have a basis for something there. Yes it needs a lot of tweaking but could be made into something really good. At the moment it has to be said - it is rubbish and the danger is the people behind it are too protective to change it. But I like the fact that the Channel has been brave, I hope that bravery extends to making the improvements the show needs. To be honest, I think I could change that show, with the same presenters into something special and I'm sure a lot of football fans could say the same. I think the show need to increase it's intelligence - be less swap shop and more analytical. A good feature for that first show for instance would be a fan of each of the relegated Championship clubs giving their analysis on their performances.

Asking fans to give their analysis of their teams performance is not my idea of quality programming, you just get one persons individual opinion and you can see from this site we do not all sing from the one songsheet.
  • Did I imagine it or did they place us in East London?
Its a programme that needs to be recorded and watched Sunday morning for 2 minutes.
You can't really expect quality from channel 5.
The next time someone moans about the bbc I'm just going to say channel 5 channel 5 channel 5 channel 5 channel 5 channel 5.

Yes, but we go on the site to hear them. The thing about fan analysis is that it doesn't have to be right and when it is telling us how great Sheff Wednesday are or how Wycombe for that matter it is boring. Where it is good to listen to fans is when they are having a moan. So that is what you use. Not excessivley but you make a feature of a few moans. You show more of the best games - not the ones you have decided are the best games before they are played and you look for the angles the media robots have missed. So more interesting to me who the surprise teams may be than repeating what the bookies think. The show can be tweaked and evolve, just needs somebody who knows how to present football and knows football. As a product the football league is far more interesting than the premiership - more games so there will be more better games for starters.

If this is a starter for 10 from channel 5, I dont have a problem with it. Sometimes you should just get the paint on the canvass then work on improving the picture. If we have the same show at the end of the season, I will be very disapointed.

Charlton fans in "We're not on first/We didn't get enough coverage compared to other clubs" shock!!!!

    Zzzzzzzzz

    You obviously didn't watch it
I think that's a nailed on certainty. He would have been pouring pints for the gleeful Eltham based Charlton fans at that time :-)

I've said it before but I really don't see how hard it would be for Sky to do three separate highlight shows for each league which could have extended highlights and interviews, they have the resources, presenters and pundits to do it. Instead we get an hour long show in their pissing studio cafe.

As a Tennis fan, the BBC fell for the Claire Balding, have an audience (like Top gear) replace John Inverdale who i like because he said what he thinks(not PC)
and the today at Wimbledon highlights will get even higher figures ?

    Wrong wrong wrong.
After 4 nights and being panned right left and centre, they reverted back to no audience and with the Wimbledon courts as a back drop.
I have no problems with Claire Balding but she was starting to be everywhere.
She stayed on the show thou.

I thought at one time the strange audience might do a Mexican wave on channel
5 as they looked so bored ? well they had no voice!

To have a manager on after his team has lost is a bad idea, (they are in bad mood) i only heard Martin Allen for a minute as i FF(taped it) but he was like a mad dog without a bone.

Because the football league is a stocking filler from them and the only real football we have in this country is product Premiership

Can't believe I had a discussion with Mrs GA about wanting to record on the TiVo box, but couldn't as she was recording 3 things at time. She she to record it from 5+1, I said no way as it wasn't in HD and that's not how I wanted to watch it. Anyway went into the other room to watch it live.

Don't think if it was in super HD 8k, it would improve, it was poor.

If the show and the audience is effectively live, then I can see it being subverted by an imaginative and reactive live audience who all go at the same time with a plan to make it more 'interesting'.
  • Recorded this as the wife likes watching casualty,
so when I turned it on after Match of the Day on BBC
began watching fell asleep, woke up and Scunthorpe were on.
Why can't they do this in order as the BBC used to.
From my point of view utter rubbish!

    Oh lovely!!!!!

Have a look at a map of London and you will see that Charlton is indeed in the EAST of London, far more east than south.

Maybe because I am in a good mood because Charlton won but I thought it was ok.

It was less forumulaic then the BBC. BBC used to play the highlights then have someone talk it about and play it all again. The energy in this show was good. I liked the retro tables. I thought the presenters were OK and weren't annoying in the same way the BBC's Manish, Claridge and clown, Clem were. The supporters in the studio gave some atmosphere but looked uncomfortable. IMO, mixing up the leagues was ok as you got a sense of the other leagues, and it wasn't just a big list of lower league goals which blended together. I would like to see best goal of the day and save of the day feature.

You still have to record it and watch it after so you can skip over the adverts or the bits you are not interested in, maybe that's why I found it less rubbish than some on the thread. (I had to watch the BBC Championship on iplayer / recorded in the same way).

The one thing that all the Championship shows struggle with is that the highlights that they show are limited so they are all pushing up hill. If more highlights were available then all the Championship shows would be a lot better.

Hopefully, the show will improve and develop as the season progresses.

Perhaps you should test your theory by walking to West Ham or Orient the other East London clubs without using a bridge, ferry, tunnel or cable car.

It's like they were aiming it at Ceebeebies or whatever it is called, if they cut out all the filler they could show more if the football.

We'll be on as the credits go up.

I dont think it warrants credits, I think they will all claim anonymity.

Absolutely terrible, show some highlights in order and occassionally have a brief chat about some games. How hard is that?

Total crap, I should have known that all I needed to do to see Charlton would be to turn on with two minutes to go ! Total amateurs !

The supposed 'Football League Tonight' show was about as football focused as the effing Women's Institute! You never know what you've got 'til it's gone... come back, Manish, we sorely miss your programme, that is, the professional commentary, the showing of matches from Championship, then Leagues One & Two, the relevant discussions between Manish and guest/s, the absence of effing adverts! Okay, the FLS was on late but at least it provided intelligent coverage. I shall be writing a letter of complaint to the charlatans at Channel 5, I shall also boycott their shoddy excuse of a programme - I can watch breakfast television if I so choose, but not at bleeding 9pm of a Saturday night! Disgruntled of Camberhell.
  • That was so fucking painful to watch even on fast forward! Unbelievably shit I don't think I could put myself through another one of their shows. How long do they have the rights for? Please tell me its only this year...

I sat down to watch your the show this morning with an open mind. After about thirty minutes, my dog knocked a candle into my lap which set my extremely bushy pubic hair on fire and I had to be rushed into hospital. My sack was beyond saving and has just been amputated and I am sat here in wretched agony. On the plus side - at least I didn't have to sit through the final hour of your excruciatingly bad television programme.

It's ironic that we can now get highlights at 9pm but the show is so bad we have to record it ( and fast forward it) at the same time as the previous BBC version was aired.

Fast forwarding to the highlights isn't even easy because they've messed about with the running order....what a massive pile of cack.

The FB page is hilarious - they put it up for 'bantz' and all it contains is thousands of people telling them it's rubbish!
