Players to watch for next Ashes in England...

    Crane
    Gubbins
    Topley
    Fisher
    Curran
    Dunn
    Lawrence

I believe at least 3 out of these 7 will be involved - any others?

Mark Butcher really rates Crane, I watched him get carted in a T20 but he was turning it a fair bit, only played two County matches and already got a 5 for.

Lees maybe another, seems to always score important runs in all forms of the game.

Bell has retired from ODIs. I had no idea that he was England's top scorer in ODIs, a record he'll keep for a while

Another one to add to the list is Olly Stone - quick bowler (over 90 Riv).

There are some who feel that Parkinson of Lancashire is an even more promising leggie than Crane!

Lancashire also home to Hameed, who's shaping up as an opener of real class and temperament

And then there's Australia's own Sam Hain...

The thing about spinners is that they take time to mature. Swann for example was picked before he was ready, similarly Rashid who was hyped up too young. Last year Adam Riley was the hyped young spin bowler, but has had a reality check this season

    What *has* happened to Riley?

I think what happens to both batters and bowlers is that they get 'sussed' after their first year and word goes around the cricket grapevine which requires them to re-invent themselves in 2nd/3rd years. Another example of this is Patel from Middx who i thought was a fantastic bowler last year but has done little this year.

Leuth, if you're a fan of leg spin, you really should have stayed in for longer than a few balls yesterday - then you could have faced my cunning version thereof. Only my second spell since 1996 though - living proof that it's a dying art. And at the age of 52, I don't think I'll be troubling the selectors.

Anyway, it was nice to meet a fellow Lifer on the cricket field - and funny that the link was your girlfriend's blog, fast assuming a mythical status among Charlton fans...

The England coaches got hold of him.

20/20 game today at Cardiff - starts at 3pm.

    England Squad
EJG Morgan*, MM Ali, SW Billings, JC Buttler†, ST Finn, AD Hales, AU Rashid, JJ Roy, BA Stokes, RJW Topley, JM Vince, DJ Willey, CR Woakes

No Joe Root is a loss, but would like to see the following...
    Roy
    Ali
    Hales
    Morgan
    Buttler
    Stokes
    Billings
    Willey
    Rashid
    Finn
    Topley

    Australia Squad
SPD Smith*, AC Agar, GJ Bailey, CJ Boyce, JA Burns, NM Coulter-Nile, PJ Cummins, MR Marsh, GJ Maxwell, JL Pattinson, MA Starc, MP Stoinis, MS Wade†, DA Warner, SR Watson

A few new faces for Oz in Burns ,Stoinis and Boyce.

For me, Oz have too much firepower and should blow us out of the water - but, you never know !

On paper, the England top 8 is very powerful - may not see the best out of them for a couple of years though - but if they stay together, which they should as they are young enough, and Joe Root comes in too then we will see a strong team.
Not sure about the bowling though.

I am also happy with the batting line up, it should be an explosive game, let us hope the weather doesn't intervene.

Seen a lot of Jason Roy this year opening the T20's for Surrey. Took his time to get going but eventually posted some nice scores. He also went okay in the 50 over games too. Hope he can do well today in the England shirt.

President - in your list of 'future england ashes players', what 'Curran' are you allowing for? I'd guess Tom but believe me when I say Sam is not very far behind him.

    Perm any 1 from 2 !

Thought Roy looked a walking wicket last time he played for England - lets hope he's calmed down a bit and doesnt want to slog every ball for 6.

Weather looking ok - no rain forecast in Cardiff - unlike here where i'm sure Noah will be 'starting the car' soon.

I think Sam is the more likely to go on and get England honours than Tom! Whilst he is a good player at County level and has had an outstanding season leading the attack at such a young age. I am of the opinion there are certain things his game lacks that will prevent him getting in the test side. (Although he may feature in one dayers)

Firstly pace... He usually bowls around 78-80 with the odd quicker ball being sorta 83.. This is not quick enough for international cricket.
His main threat is getting the ball to move off the pitch and he is most potent on green tops! England have plenty of bowlers like that. And many of them are quicker. I think he wouldn't be great outside English conditions, in fact I think he would lose all his threat.

Sam however is quicker, has already mastered swing both conventional and reverse! And has his batting on top of that!
I think he will end up batting in the top six at County level!

And Oz will play Boyce and Stoinis ...

    Team is...
    Warner,Watson,Smith,Maxwell,Marsh,Stoinis,Wade,Starc,Coulter-Nile,Boyce,Cummins

Lots of bowling options there in Cummins,Boyce,Coulter-Nile,Starc,Stoinis,Marsh,Maxwell and Watson - so expect lots of bowling changes from SMith- and apparently , Boyce is a leggie.

Plenty of power in that lineup, though not sure how Billings is justified a place as a batsman on current form
