    Yes it was the Republic, as I posted at 9.46 just after it happened I may have been a bit hasty in naming the team that beat Germany just as Ireland, especially as Northern Ireland beat Greece. I rushed it.

    The country's official name is "Ireland" in almost every context. It doesn't have a long name like Germany (or most countries).

    The only situation in which it is known as "Republic of Ireland" is in international football.

    Funny, I was brought up knowing it as the "Free State". No wonder we are all confused.

    Free State vs Combined forces of East and West Germany - Has a kind of nice ring to it.
