The R M was founded for the exclusive use of the royal household at the behest of Henry VIII in 1516. Not until 1635 was the service opened for the use of the general public.
The penny black, the world's first adhesive postage stamp, was introduced in 1840.
Today, Britain is the only country in the world not to have the name of the country on its stamps.
Despite cutbacks, privatisation, emails, facebook, twitter, twatter and twotter, the Royal Mail still employs over 140,000 people and is one of the UK's biggest employers.
