Oh those were the days (dreams)killerandflash said:I'm comforted by the fact that is a Riga signing, someone he knows well, rather than a signing done by some network computer scouting "guru" based on his stats.
It's like Curbs bringing Gatting, Nelson and Robinson in from Brighton in his early days1 -
A great team of real characters, but playing in front of 5000 people in Upton Park wasn't exactly brilliant!uie2 said:

We won't know until we see him play .. my initial thought ? .. 'not another f***ing foreigner with no experience of English football' .. was there no cheapish, FL experienced late twenties English/British centre back available ? .. we will see1

Nice comment on the radio this afternoon, not about us but it might as well have been
"How come clubs change managers all the time when they get things wrong but those within the clubs who are responsible for a stream of bad signings just keep on making the same mistakes without ever seemingly any comeback."1 -
In the 'standard English model', it's the managers who are given a budget, decide who to sign and would push owners on terms of any potential deal.mogodon said:Nice comment on the radio this afternoon, not about us but it might as well have been

I don't know what clubs the radio person was referring to, but in the Premier League, I think those who have embraced the 'continental model' with a DoF and Head Coach (eg Newcastle, Southampton, Tottenham, Liverpool) are usually fairly patient with the coach. One problem with our network is that there is no DoF or, if there is, it's Karel Fraeye's laptop.
I am not sure how the models compare in the Championship, English v continental, with respect to manager job security.1 -
Liverpool are responsible for our defensive problems this season.
First Gomez now Teixeira.

Sure there was. His name was Roger Johnson. A relegation zone club is going to have to spend even bigger than most to have a chance at anyone 'proven' and not several years past their sell by date.Lincsaddick said:We won't know until we see him play .. my initial thought ? .. We can't win with 11 players. Putting a team of 2 would be suicide Colin.colin1961 said:Excellent signing and very strong .. Bauer and him together will be some team

I thought he looked good. Rufus says he was quite good which is praise indeed.0

Seems a solid no-nonsense player - doesn't look the type to get bullied.0

Harry Lennon did well. Don't write him off.colin1961 said:Excellent signing and very strong .. Bauer and him together will be some team

Impressed with him - promising start0

If this is the sort of centre back we've been needing all this time, why have we been mucking about signing chuff on the cheap? It's clear that if we opened the purse strings just a little wider, we can get some real quality players.1
-
Good debut, made the Blackburn forwards look stupid at times.
Very solid alongside Lennon, if they can both stay fit I think we have good pairing at last.0 -
Looked very good, you could see his experience in that he managed to continuously challenge the Blackburn players quite physically without giving away free kicks. Lennon and Fox should learn a lot from him.
A tick for Riga player judgement on first impressions3 -
Because pre Riga, no one at the club had a clue where to find any?Callumcafc said:If this is the sort of centre back we've been needing all this time, why have we been mucking about signing chuff on the cheap? Well done M. Duchatelet.
Your innovative strategy of letting the coach pick his own players pays off.
If only other owners could see his genius.
Jorge didn't mess about or try to be fancy, just got it clear. Physically strong too.
Only one game but so far so good1 -
Was my Man of the Match today... Really had Rhodes in his pocket today.
He has the attitude of just lumping the ball away which is annoying because it doesnt give us anything to build on, but at present its what we need0 -
Had Graham in his back pocket and made Rhodes look shite at times. Also thought he was very clever with his positioning, he conceded a foul in the first half and it pissed me off, he used really clever body movement to make someone fall over and the shite ref blew the whistle. Nonsense. Very very solid debut and feel a lot more comfortable with him at the back.2
