Second time in s week I get to comment on game time.
Stoppages are part of the game. Time added on is for excessive delays. So let's just decide what excessive is (20,30,40 seconds), and stop the clock only when that has been exceeded. The ref can still book people taking too long, but their ability to time waste is limited to the allowed delay.
I'm all for video reviews for diving and acting. I think it can be very hard to pick this out in the heat of the game for the officials. Post match reviews would be an excellent way to handle this, with increasing punishment for repeat offenders.0 -
There is no possible means of operating a video-replay system that does not mess with the fundamental principle that football is a non-stop game.2

I was using the cub analogy a bit t-in-c to be honest Muttley. I was more thinking of even as near as our level. Coming 14th in the Premiership doesn't have as much at stake as coming second in the Championship after all. My big question as I suggested, is where do you draw the line? I always think of the famous Fulham throw in...MuttleyCAFC said:
It never bothered me - it is played to the same rules - it is just there is more at stake the higher levels you go and that means you should use technology if it means getting more decisions right. You can still play a game of tennis without Hawkeye, a game of rugby without the vdieo replay. It doesn't demean the grass roots game at all for these sports and it won't football.Algarveaddick said:
Basically the powers that be want to have two games - top flight football, and everyone else. So as we are creeping towards it anyway, I guess they might as well go all the way. I have been vehemently opposed to video technology (though not goal line technology, that is fact not opinion), as I can see it completely taking over eventually - "If we can decide this using it, why not use it to decide that?". But it is going to happen now. I liked the fact that football, until very recently was the same game whether it was the cubs playing in the park or the world cup final. Sad we are going to lose that.ForeverAddickted said:
Video refs dont interest me that much... Goal Line Technology is great but it needs to be filtered down the Leagues a bit, as at the moment its only applicable in the Premier League rather than in the Championship / League One.
The 4th sub in extra time is also another way for the bigger clubs with larger squads to gain advantage over the smaller ones.0 -
What decisions would the video ref be use for ?
Would the Fulham throw in have gone to video?
And take out of the equation that was palace ,so was deffo a penalty, at the weekend would people having seen replays think it was still a penalty or not0 -
Let's face it, if Trevor Kettle was the video ref and the club were providing the feed, the wrong player would be sent off for the wrong incident in the wrong game.3

Saw the replay on slomo half a dozen times and still me and my son couldn't agree if it was a pen!oohaahmortimer said:What decisions would the video ref be use for ?

You missed out "take a goal kick or it becomes a corner". That would really get the 'keeper to put a step in it.ForeverAddickted said:Shame they cant counter time wasting... by implimenting a 20/20 cricket style format - i.e. You get so many seconds to
- take a corner else it becomes a Goal-Kick
- take a throw-in else it goes to the opposition
- complete a substitution else the player coming on isnt allowed on the pitch until the next time the ball goes out of play (i.e. you briefly go down to 10-men)
Really fed up and tired with time wasting (even when Charlton do it)... I go to a match to watch a game of Football, not to watch a player strolling off the pitch (Who was running 2secs ago) whilst giving all his team mates a cuddle

Why not just award a penalty goal, like a penalty try in rugby, but only if it's a goal-scoring opportunity. No-one gets booked or sent off, so the rest of the game isn't affected, and the offending team don't get the chance to not concede a goal by the penalty being saved.Leuth said:

How many times has the keeper saved a one on one? As I said I don't agree at all, but if it were brought in, a penalty "goal" could only be given for handball on the line, surely?AddicksAddict said:

If we start doing that, it becomes a different game. As long as everyone knows the rules, and is playing by the same rules, it really does not matter - it is just a game after all.0 -
You are correct... I thought I'd missed one somewhereAddicksAddict said:

Exactly what I was getting at oohaah. In the pub we had a 50/50 split over the Benteke penalty. The pro-technology folk said "If the bloke watching the tele can't make a decision, then the referee's original decision stands" - except of course that the referee's original decision was "I dunno, let's ask someone else..."oohaahmortimer said:What decisions would the video ref be use for ?

And what if play goes on for another two or three minutes after the incident when a pen isn't given (the ball does not always go dead). Does the man in the box tell the ref he's missed awarding a penalty? And while he is replaying that incident, naturally he doesn't have his eye on the current phase of play, so another incident could go by the wayside? I can hear it now: "Then, we have TWO men on the tele replay job"
And what if, that phase of play, (which is subsequently declared "dead", because a penalty/free kick/offside/throw in/corner should have been awarded two minutes ago) ends in a red card offence? Is the red card null and void as that phase of play officially does not exist?
It's a can of worms I tell you...

I've always thought it really unfair, when a defender or keeper makes a genuine attempt to tackle a forward in the box, slightly mistimes it and as a result is sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity, so glad they will change that to a yellow.
To me the red card should be for professional fouls like the Willie Young Paul Allen incident, where no attempt was made to get the ball

Thats where the 'Palace Law' comes in, of course it was a penalty, it was against Palace.Algarveaddick said:

my brilliant idea only applies to last-man fouls, although maybe it could apply outside the box too. a last-man foul on the edge of the centre circle = red card OR a kick at goal with no other player allowed forward of the taker. it'd be fun! sometimes people would miss!0 -
I agree with the general principle that match officials should be given additional assistance by video replays but wouldn't offer an opinion on the detail until that detail has been thought through and published.
Any further evidence that all referees at this level get the vast majority of decisions right must be welcome by everyone.0 -
Combining several ideas, video reviews yes but not for every little thing. Each team gets 3 challenges per half and only the captain approaches the ref. Teams would then only make a challenge on a possible game changing incident.1
-
..until they have only used 5 of their 6 challenges in the 92nd minute, and call one tactically to break up the other team's play. BTW that 12 challenges PER GAME. Could easily lead to 24 minutes added time. That's a lot of missed last trains at a 7.45 evening KO...se7oaks said:Combining several ideas, video reviews yes but not for every little thing. My anorak-y friend who is a former (low level) ref has looked at the details of proposed trial, there is no proviso for appeals, only the ref and video official can decide when a replay is called for apparently.1

Sounds a good idea until the Referee is surrounded by the whole Chelsea squad after every small issueAlgarveaddick said:My anorak-y friend who is a former (low level) ref has looked at the details of proposed trial, there is no proviso for appeals, only the ref and video official can decide when a replay is called for apparently.

Of course the rule is in place that only the Captain can talk to the Referee but Chelsea seem to ignore that, needs to be a rule which states you get an instant yellow card for arguing with the ref unless your the Captain with no loopholesAlgarveaddick said:
