Sad to report that former Charlton forward Kevin Barry has died at the age of 85 in Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Woolwich-born Kevin, who passed away on Monday, made four appearances for Charlton in the 1952/53 season, including a debut in the FA Cup third round match at Hull City on January 10th, although he was on the club's professional books for eight years from 1947 to 1955. Despite being naturally right-footed he played on the left wing and was mainly denied a first-team spot by Billy Kiernan. However, he scored 25 goals for the reserves in 1951/52.

A very nice man who I knew when I was younger . Signed his first pro contract at 17 and would have played a lot more first team games with todays substitute system . Later he played regularly for Woolwich Town where he was a real star.
Met him a few years ago and he was still talking about Tom Finney who he rated as the best player he had ever seen.

  • Just about remember KB - saw him on a single occasion. Teams far more settled in their makeup than today - line up changes infrequent - probably fewer opportunities to break in to the first team and being a 'reserve player' for almost your entire career was neither unusual or unfavourable especially if you were attached to a big club - Charlton were a big club in the early 50's.

Would occasionally go to Highbury to see Arrsenal reserves - always 10,000+ Present.

    RIP Kevin
