    You can’t put it down as one thing,” he said. “We had three managers and you don’t really see a team that has three managers do well.

    “We lacked a little bit of English experience. We had some good players but they didn’t really know the league. The season before we had brought in Andre Bikey and Tal Ben Haim from abroad but they knew English football and that made things easier for me to settle in.

    “There were a lot of changes in players as well - we were getting a lot in on loan and that meant the squad was not settled.”

    Russell Slade’s appointment was never going to prevent a number of the most marketable assets leaving The Valley.

    Gudmundsson said: “I have nothing bad to say about the bosses I worked under but in League One you need a British manager who knows the division.

    “It is all about getting a team together, know your gameplan and start the season well.
