Brother of the better known John Charles .. a very decent player in his own right .. died aged 81 .. RIP

Like his brother he could play Centre Forward or Centre half with equal effect, although his favoured position was at right half.
Once saw him score a hat trick against the then all conquering Wolves in 4-4 draw, one of the best matches I've ever been to.2 -
As a young boy I can remember seeing both Mel and John playing for Cardiff City against Charlton. The Charles brothers, along with Ivor Allchurch, were THE Welsh footballers of the time.

Probably at the same match - Allchurch also had a playing brother.
Also saw Mel at Highbury - cultured stylish player , but always in the shadow of his brother John who was truly immense both in size and skill.
