I was able to struggle on until I was 35 without one although I had to manage the pain etc... Arthritis in both knees now for some reason, but at least I have memories of playing. I got injured at 21. I don't know of any players I played with over the years who had ops who were able to carry on. Do you mind if I ask what the injury was? It's been the case for ~15-20 (maybe more) years now that arthroscopic surgeries on torn cartilage in the knee is pretty straightforward. I don't know if this occurred beforehand or what the NHS did to you but would be curious.0 -
I'm 52 now - I did tear my cartilage. Played a 90 minute game, then an indoor 5 a side game that evening. Was a bit tired I remember and didn't fancy it but was doing it as a favour. Went to dribble past an opponent but my shoe gripped the gym floor and my knee came out of it's socket. Two mates with similar injuries who had to pack in the game advised me. The NHS just took their catilage out and told them they couldn't play anymore. I wasn't going to have that. The NHS had no interest in them being able to continue to play and the same would have applied to me.1
