Working in Dublin - Any tips?

It's going to be largely 9-5 and whilst working, but I'm looking for things to do of an evening. It's a bit frustrating, last time I worked abroad it was for 2 week blocks - so I always had a weekend to enjoy. I'm not too sure when these meetings are scheduled in for in the future though, so I may be able to suggest to my client that we split the travel expenses and I'll make a weekend out of it in future. (I'm expecting Monday meetings anyway)
On another note, I'm hoping to extend my stay next week, and catch Ireland vs All Blacks at a bar in Dublin - alas, I'm not sure if they've already booked the return flights. Any suggestions for diplomatically extending (self-funded obviously) my stay, without incurring additional fees to the company who are paying me to be out there? A tad frustrated as I suggested I invoice them for travel expenses, and I'd have had complete control - understandably they'd rather oversee that themselves though.. Doh! I don't really want to incur a cancellation fee for them.

Find a pub4

When you do find a pub, before ordering, ask if for the terms on the HP. It's about 7 quid a pint over there0

It is if you drink in Temple Bar or the clubs. Plenty of proper pubs charging about €5.50, which is no more than London. For sport, try Sinnotts or DTwo, or try any of the bars out towards the Aviva to get the atmosphere as well.i_b_b_o_r_g said:When you do find a pub, before ordering, ask if for the terms on the HP. If you wanted to extend your stay, couldn't you just blow out the return flight they've booked for you and book your own with one of the cheapo companies?0

That's what I'm contemplating, I don't want them to get bent over if they get any subsequent fees.DaveMehmet said:If you wanted to extend your stay, couldn't you just blow out the return flight they've booked for you and book your own with one of the cheapo companies?

Last time I was working away, it was in Sweden. Similar prices, I dread to think how much I spent there..i_b_b_o_r_g said:When you do find a pub, before ordering, ask if for the terms on the HP. It's about 7 quid a pint over there
I developed a habit of watching foreign football matches involving teams I'd never heard of, whilst drinking copious amounts of beer, all to get an eyeful and a cheeky chat with the bird behind the counter. I probably drank more than I earnt!1 -
That Gallagher Boxty place is absolutely incredible - ended up eating there twice when I was over.guinnessaddick said:Guinness factory tour

City centre plenty of good pubs charge €5.00 for Guinness. €4.00 further out. If you're looking for atmosphere around the Aviva (I wouldn't unless there's a match there), then go to Ringsend/Irishtown. Expect to see lots of Liverpool fans wherever you go.
Given the recent result against New Zealand, any pub with a TV will show the next one and most would have a good atmosphere if it's at the weekend.
If you're staying central, drink around George's Street on the south side. Plenty of decent restaurants on and around Dame Street/George Street/William Street, but I like Parnell Street for Chinese & Korean.
Unless you'd prefer tourist experience and tourist prices, in which case never leave Temple Bar.0 -

Treat yourself to some Dublin Bay prawns and get a proper pint of Guinness down your neck. Also find a proper pub that does a bit of diddly, diddly music, the craic is great and if you are not up on a table by the end of the night you are in the wrong pub.0

This is helpful, I'm over for the Ireland Australia Rugby match at end of month.0

As an old Irish colleague of mine was fond of singing to us in the team...
"When err you go across the sea to Ireland
Take a boat or you will surely drown..."0 -
O'dodnhues in Lower Baggot St. for good pint and theres normally some Irish music in the evening. The Palace Bar in Fleet St is a great venue for socialising, drinking and watching a game. Monty's of Kathmandu is good curry house. Enjoy0

guinness storehouse is defo worth a visit and good value think its 16 euro and you get to pour your own pint and have a pint up in the sky bar which looks out over dublin city and the wicklow mountains.

So they charge you €16 and you still have to do the barmans job for them?2

Lucky Reds, unfortunately you've missed the Irish football season by about two weeks, otherwise you could go and feel lucky to be a CAFC fan for once.
Unless, of course you get to one of Dundalk's Europa League matches which are played in Tallaght.
@IA which pubs can you get a pint for a fiver? It's Friday so this is urgent.1 -
There was a place just off O'Connell Street. I think it was called the Confession Box, and I think pints were €4.50.SpicedAddick said:Lucky Reds, unfortunately you've missed the Irish football season by about two weeks, otherwise you could go and feel lucky to be a CAFC fan for once.

I think Slattery's on Capel Street and the Long Hall on George's Street were both €5.00 but I could be wrong. Places close to Tara Street are cheap (for Dublin) and decent atmosphere.0 -

There's also a place along the river where the whole bar is covered with decorations and pints were less than €50

I went to see Bohemians play Shamrock Rovers when I was working out there a couple of years ago. Not the greatest game I've ever seen.SpicedAddick said:Lucky Reds, unfortunately you've missed the Irish football season by about two weeks, otherwise you could go and feel lucky to be a CAFC fan for once.

You probably went on a bad night, normally the games are off a similar quality to the knock-out stages of the Champions League, or higher.0 -

Get along to Shelbourne Park or Harold's Cross for a night at the dogs. Both not that far from City Centre.2
