Charlton v MK Dons - Post Match Views

  • Phillips excellent again - should be our first choice. Poor game but at least 2nd 45 better - poor finishing and final ball lacking in quality.

Botaka is a bit bonkers - loads of energy, moments of brilliance but seems to lack a footballing brain. Makes the wrong decision too often.
  • Still, if we can play like that and neither lose or concede a goal then that's a positive to build on for the rest of the season

Did people always expect Phillips to be this good at the academy?

So far from what I've seen he's much better than Pope. Wouldn't even drop him for a returning Rudd if he's still playing this well.

I am pleased to say that for some time now with all the goalkeeper shenanigans as in Pope and Henderson that in the end Phillips might be the one to come through.
Keepers get better with age and experience, although with Dillon's pitiful wage at Charlton, he may want to get the experience elsewhere.

Let's not forget that Rudd is really good too

    Freezing. Shit. The End.

Probably the best match report in the world. It was 8 degrees but felt like -8.

Wasn't that cold. Plus, there was a very elegant dusk, with a slim crescent moon over Venus garnishing the Jimmy Seed. It is a shame that more people were not gasping.
  • The front of the West Stand is quite cold, no wonder there are so many thermos flasks and blankets there!
  • In the history of CAFC has there ever been a match where large portions of the stadium have been closed?

Duller than a dull day in Dullington on Thames! It was like a training match with the (lack of) atmosphere to match. Can't even be bothered to comment on individual performances other than I now understand why Botaka isn't allowed out to play too often!

Was I watching a different game or am I just more reasonable?

    I thought Botaka played well.

Sure he had lots of trickery and fast feet, but his judgement as when to hold or pass is truly awful and wingers are meant to be able to cross the ball, although they have been as rare as hen's teeth at Charlton in recent times.

You didn't miss much. Robinson has a bigger job on his hands than many realise.

2nd Half then yes. Wait till February to see what Robinson (If he's still there) has to play with

We just don't do cup competitions do we.
51 years of supporting Charlton and I've never seen us progress beyond the quarter finals in a major cup competition.
Not that i was expecting us to this season.

    Just saying

Weren't you at Wembley for the Full Members Cup Final??

    Yes i was
God help us if that's all we can remember: )

I was impressed with Robinson's enthusiasm. I'm usually a bit weary of the overly theatrical touch line antics, Sherwood springs to mind. However, I think it's quite genuine with him, as opposed to a Sherwood who does it to mask the lack of substance.

Part of me also thinks KR needs to show that animation to try and fire us up. I think he gets just how fractious things are and wants to do all he can to get us behind the team (even though we are). This is going to be a massive job for him working under this lot, and although he may have irked some by comments about KM etc, I will be getting behind him.

The problem is also that I don't think the team is strong enough. Fox was targeted quite effectively today and for me is still a liability. We're not strong or quick enough in the centre of midfield and Ajose isn't up to it.

Thought Fox was ok ish, otherwise I agree about midfield and Ajose.

Was I watching a different game or am I just more reasonable?

He played really well. The final ball needs improving, but you could say that about quite a few of our players.

You could see what Robinson had tried to install, basically hustle and chase down, full backs to support the attack, didn't seem to suit Ulvestad, Lookman or Botaka. Crofts is just off the pace of the game despite his running. So again, midfield just not good enough. The system doesn't fit the squad.

Keeper and Bauer played very well. Bauer should be one if not two divisions higher. Magennis as always was committed and work rate beyond belief. Different position but reminds me of Stevie Brown.

If I was Robinson i'd be looking forward to the transfer window, he also needs to work on set pieces where often we just can't put in a decent ball, passing at this tempo needs work on as often wayward/too short/too long.

Given the choice I suspect there's at least 5 players not up to it in this formation.

Interestingly Robinson was constantly talking to the other coaches as if they were little school kids, and for some reason Johnson as well, what was that all about?!

I don't see anything that makes me think we'll improve. Mid to lower end of the table.

Lastly, although the lower west was quite busy, I couldn't help survey what was before me, an empty east, an empty upper north and a 25% full lower north, it may be the cup and it may be December but I just felt pretty sad to be honest. Under 5,000 to see the addicts with a new manager.

Roland, just do one, i'm starting to get really REALLY angry now.

    ....Botaka ... awful today.

Seriously? He looked the only player capable of a moment of magic that might change the game (as he did v. She'd Utd).

In the history of CAFC has there ever been a match where large portions of the stadium have been closed?

There was one four weeks ago against Scunthorpe and, I understand, two earlier in the season when there was one fewer stand open, alhough I didn't bother with them. In fact, you could argue all the matches at the start of the 85/86 season when the East Terrace was shut were comparable.

    Poor game.

I was sat more or less behind the dug our. Robinson very much in the Luzon mode. But lots of good coaching and motivating from the touchline but also a lot of visible frustration. Holding his head in his hands as if he was thinking "what the F am I doing here".

He had the sort of reception from the mk dons fans that we would give Powell.

I think he could be fun if he lasts longer than a few weeks.
  • How sad it all is when MK Dons fans have more personality than ourselves , welcome to Roland's footballing universe , death during life

    Pretty dull affair

At game, haven'r read other views:

Robinson chose quite an attacking 4-4-2 with two orthodox wingers who, not unexpectedly, turned in a mixed bag of tricks and poor judgements, but did track back. One of the forwards turned up and gave his all; the other one didn't - who could I possibly mean? In fact he's now straying dangerously close to Marcus Bent levels of application and pretend endeavour, skipping about to look keen whilst making no attempt whatsoever to close anyone down. Oh, and he skied another decent chance.

The familiar shortcomings surfaced again, as did the familiar strengths, with the two strong CB's ably assisted by a third when he came on at RB. Phillips is growing in stature, looking confident and calm, with some very good distribution. Strange to leave the two attacking subs until added time but perhaps Robinson wanted to get a good look at how his first team managed all aspects of the situation. That said, he must surely have drawn one or two conclusions by then - I had!!

WIngers that tracked back? I sat in the Lower North behind Fox for the first half. He was left continually exposed by Lookman and was turned inside out by Reeves, supported by the overlapping Baldock, who exposed his usual weakness of not being able to defend against opponents cutting inside to attack his right foot.

Goodness me. That's quick work by Robinson if we've signed Mooney back and Mark Venus. No one ever rated Mooney though and Venus must be about 50.
