I think it derives from an advertising campaign - the "Wally Gherkin" and before that it was London slang based on the corruption of the word "Olive". When Eastern European immigrants arrived in the late 19th Century they brought a liking for pickled cucumbers which, like olives, were sold from wooden barrels and also began to be referred to as a wallies.

Ive said it before and im gona say it again Picallili is the devils clunge. never eat anything that can bu used to paint signs in train tunnels. I am a salad dodger of the highest order i consider the lettece and tomato in a whopper as one of my five a day.. Sure i will probably be dead by the time im 60 but im not a rabbit so the thought of tucking into a big lettace leaf or a carrot is beyond me.

Its a kosher thing. Have books etc about the old east end and pickled fish, whalleys etc were items that were largely eaten by the jewish imigrants. I think even savolys are as well.

Tried to get hot salt beef sarnies from a local kosher sarnie shop near where im working but they sell out so fast.

just looked up "rollmop" on the net as thats what pickled fish are and it says that traditionaly its pickled fish wrapped round a gherrkin . Comes from Germany and is used as a hangover cure ? I still think its kosher.

"Gherkins distributed throughout europe by the migration of jewish settlers" --- i thank you !
