When Josh Umerah replaced Fredrik Ulvestad at Southend, it was the closest we have come to having two players whose surnames begin with U on the pitch at the same time. Did Umerah get any studs over the line before Ulvestad left the field, I wonder?

The only other Us to play for the club that I can think of are Derek Ufton and the splendid Albert Uytenbogaardt. Any others?

Shame we didn't sign Lopez Ufarte as my dad found his name an unending source of mirth in the 1982 world cup.

Robert Ung. He played for us in the late 80s according to 9-year-old me, who, desperate to win an 'Alphabet of Players' quiz on a Coca Cola Soccer Star scheme, proclaimed that Ung was a young midfielder who had made his debut a week earlier. The coaches were dubious but, not having the internet with which to prove me a liar, had to accept my answer.

It's also worth mentioning I am the Surrey Soccer Star Scheme 1988 Alphabet Quiz champion.

That was about his average in @lancashire lad's player stats.
