RIP Paul one of my first hero's at the Valley. I used to watch them train at the Valley during the school holidays and he always would speak to you. Loved watching that back five of Charlie Wright Kinsey and Curtis and Went and Reeves in the middle. No age at all so sad.3

RIP. Big strong centre half, as others have said part of the great 68/69 side.0

Very sad. RIP0

One of the earliest football heroes for me. Towering centre half. RIP1
-
Terribly sad news. Loved watching him as a kid0

RIP. Like Ray Treacy, Harry Gregory and Bob Curtis, all sadly gone in recent years, he was there the first game I went to in 1969.4

As others have said, one of my first Charlton heroes. So sad.0

Sad news. Like many other posters, Paul Went was in the first team I saw at The Valley in 1968. I was going to say "one of my favourites"but I think I said the same about Bob Curtis, Ray Treacy and Harry Gregory; that team were all favourites, if that's possible.

Used to visit our Local as a Courage rep. after retiring from football . Nice man .

Agree with everything here.
Didn't Went hold the record at one point (after his moves to Fulham and Portsmouth) for the highest transfer fees paid for a player outside the First Division?0 -

A great player from the golden season of 1968/69. Along with Peter Reeves, was one of my favourites from that era. RIP Paul Went .. A Charlton Legend if ever there was one.
Can I propose a round of applause for Paul in the 5th minute of the match against Millwall ...11 -

Very sad news a firm favourite with my Dad and uncle who often spoke of him and that team nostalgically. We have some cracking pictures in the museum of him should they be of use @Ollywozere6

Too young. Rest in Peace Paul.
Would have been in the team when da first took me in 1970, but I was only 4 and spent most of the time playing on the steps around his feet in that bit between the North and the old West stand. I know da was a big fan!1 -
Saw him recently at Harry Gregory's funeral.....they were great pals.
He didn't look at all well I have to say. I had a nice chat with him.
Gone to meet up with Harry Boy, I've no doubt.
Real East London lad was Paul, thighs like a giant red wood and built like a brick shit house!
Great player, a loud and larger than life character, you knew it when Paul was in the room and of course a great fella too!
Last I heard he was awaiting major heart surgery.
RIP Paul.....RIP3 -
Very sad news.
As others have said, one of the many great players in the "nearly" season of 1968/9.
Many wonderful memories. RIP Paul Went.

Yes, I remember that own goal - I couldn't help laughing! But a great player, a rock of a centre half and a real leader. Scored over 40 goals in 480ish games in his entire pro career. RIPmasicat said:Loved thunder thighs and remember him scoring one of the best own goals ever. RIP Paul.

That's sad. Our Bobby Moore. RIP0

Very sad news. One of my heroes from when I first started watching us and met him on a couple of ocassions when I was a young lad. An absolutely lovely man.
RIP Paul.0 -
This makes you realise we are all getting older when your childhood heroes pass away. Seem to remember a fee of £25,000 involved but not sure if that's what we paid ? Or was that what we got for him ? Sad news. R.I.P Paul.0

A good player I was surprised we were able to keep as long as we did.
RIP0 -
Very sad news. 67 is no age.
A cracking defender with quads like tree trunks. In terms of the central defenders I've seen, I'd put him right up there with people like Rufus and Shirtliff.
I remember that he took over penalty duties at the start of the 69/70 season after Harry Gregory and Bob Curtis had missed a few.0
