Faye - Keep as a Central Defender

As suggested on another thread it now seems possible that Faye might have to remain with us and could possibly be used as a central defender. He was of course used there before when we were in the prem (seems such a long time ago) and I think the general concensus would be that he did pretty well. Of course he is on wages that we would rather not have on the books but thats hardly his fault. We do need another central defender IMHO and perhaps keeping Faye even on his current wages would be offset by not having to spend on a new central defender. This might also free up any money we do have to spend on a decent midfielder. For my money I think this is a reasonable option and one I would certainly support. What say you ?

I'll paste my comment from the other thread:

A role where he excelled in in the Premiership. And i'm being serious.

If he does play for us next season no doubt he'll be booed continuously. Its not his fault he cost so much money and the club was willing to pay him silly wages.

Will fall on deaf ears but if he does end up playing for us next year lets at least give him a bit of a chance.

    shoot him .

Pards says we are short of defenders. still not short in midfield then ? no need to look for a ball winner, etc etc etc. Unless we have an enforcer of some sort Shelvey wont last. In this league they can still "take u out".

Not his fault he is shit , dosnt try, cant play. I hope i dont see him in a CAFC shirt ever again. As for give "him a chance" errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr that would be a no. He can f**k off.

Great idea, lets put a gutless jessie who's only marking time in the heart of defence. The man tackled like a schoolgirl when he was playing in midfield, is that what we want in a Centre Half?

Agree with you about midfield GH but I still think Faye could prove very good for us given a chance as WSS says.

On the flip side GH, if a single central defender gets injured we would have nobody to play there who has played league football.

In the midfield, if a central midfielder gets injured at least we have players (fair enough they may not be to the quality we strive for) who have league experience to play there:

    Holland
    Semedo
    Racon
    Ambrose
    Wright
    Basey(?)

    Central defenders we have:

    Hudson
    Fortune
    Semedo(?)

He played well at centre half in the Premiership.

    Besides, needs/musts.

I guess we have to add Semedo to that central defender list ?

It's wrong to say that he 'can't play' - I think the general consensus was that he looked pretty useful during his first few games, but tailed off from there.

Whether that was down to confidence, lack of interest etc is another matter, but he obviously became a very easy scapegoat once some of the other non-performers went after relegation.

Don't really see a way back from him here, but it wouldn't be that big a surprise to me if a club like Stoke, Hull etc took a risk and signed him and he then went in and looked half decent again - although the question would be how long it would last for.

No sell Faye, it's not just because he's crap and expensive but he just wasn't as good at centre back as people claim IMO. I would rather we had kept hold of McCarthy who, although he often seeks sanctuary on the 18yd box, he does know how to tackle. Can't believe Fortune is still with us, I'd sell both Faye and Fortune and bring in two central defenders and a right back. But if Bougherra leaves too then we're talking about re-building an entire backline 4 weeks from the first game of the season.

As for midfield I would seriously consider leaving it as it is and throwing Wright, Arter and Shelvey into the deep end. They've got to mature sometime and they're not going to do it in the stiffs.

You can only sell players if someone is willing to buy them...

Can`t see Shelvey and Wright being the answer for a whole campaign to be honest. Not really fair on them either. If Shelvey plays 20 games that would be enough IMHO and if Wright is good enough then I would expect no more than a cameo role also. From Pards comments about strengthening the defence I am worried that Bougherra will depart leaving us with real defensive problems so near start of season. Keep Faye I say at least we know he is capable at this level.

Financially, the club are obviously in a very difficult position on this.

Faye's signed a three-year contract, meaning that he will be a free agent at the end of this season and will be able to get a nice signing-on fee from whoever might take him.

He may well now be happy to see out his last year with us, pick up his (very good) money and bide his time to the summer, while Pardew and the board want to cash in something on him while they can.

If no one is prepared to pay and no one wants him on loan, then surely he will have to be considered for selection?

Perhaps the reason why we can't get rid of him lies not so much in his work rate but that the report of corruption in football is about to be handed in to the CPS and Faye is mentioned in it:

I do think we are overly harsh on our players sometimes. I've seen Faye have 'mares for us but I also saw him pay well, especially at centre half, where he really throw himself into the role (and no, didn't tackle like a jessie at all).

However, anyone on Prem wages simply has to leave, as soon as. We can't afford it and it's not good value or good for team spirit when someone is on silly money when the rest aren't.

Faye is without doubt the worst player to have a Charlton shirt for at least a decade, his "performance" in the Cup up at Forest was a disgrace. I don't recall any barnstorming appearances at centre back, maybe a couple of games where he put more than his usual 10% effort in & maybe even controlled a few bobbling balls & completed more than a half-dozen simple passes.

I suspect any positional crisis will be solved with loaned players.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he give a penalty away in that game? He got done by a long ball over the top and was out-paced by Diouf.

I think we really are desperate if we want/need to cling onto this guy.

Despite Faye being touted around clubs in the Uk, nobody wants him. I know for a fact that he doesnt want to move abroad because he is only a year away from getting a British passport, so it seems we are stuck with a player nobody wants and he is on top wages.....what do you suggest? Let him rot in the reserves on silly money? Play him in midfield? Play him at Centre back?

We are currently in a no win situation with this player, so our only hope is to play him and hopefully somebody in the UK will come in for him at Xmas...any other sensible suggestions?....please put on a postcard and send them to the main board. Im sure they would love a soloution to this on going problem

If we can't shift him we have to play him in midfield and Pardew has to earn his salary by motivating him to pull his finger out.

Faye is (was) a premiership player albeit lower end. Alongside ZZ or Shelvey he could solve some of our midfield difficulties in the championship.

The man's the gayest midfield enforcer i've ever seen. He's built like a brick sh1thouse but refuses to tackle or to intimidate the opposition. A lump with no skills who puts himself is just about acceptable but Faye's not even at that level. If we go into the season with him in our midfield we've no chance of doing anything and we could destroy the young talent who'll have the misfotune to be paired with him. Get rid of him at any cost.

I don't wan the man anywhere near the club. For me the game that really summed him up for me was that game he played in the cup at home last year. Who was it aagainst, Carlisle or someone?

Looked totally disinterested and just strolled around the place. He can f right off. If I had the dough I'd pay his contract up early myself just so that I don't have to see him in a Charlton shirt ever again.

To be fair so did half the team.

Apart from that agree 100% offie.
  • Look, if we are stuck with Faye, at least lets try and get the best out of him. Why not give him a run at centre back during the friendlies and give him a bit of encouragement. You never know he might get the message and begin to feel a part of the team with an improvement in his performance ----- its a confidence thing perhaps.
