Anatomy of a transfer
Interesting feature on the whole process of signing a player.
I did find this section amusing though
"(Steve Head) adds: “There is no substitute for watching a player live, in my opinion. Statistics are useful. They support the process but they shouldn’t drive it. They’re handy to have but a lot of it is down to interpretation – I’d never be comfortable recommending a player that I hadn’t seen play.”
Such a point is reinforced by Performance Analyst Shaw, who will also have access to a variety of stats on a player’s performance and history.
“Something we have addressed since the summer, is increasing physically going to watch players as a management team to get a feel for a player in the flesh,” he says."

"who will also have access to a variety of stats on a player’s performance and history."
Hmm, that sounds like he is sat in front of a PC playing Football Manager...0 -
I always thought it went like this.....
Driesen "yoDadRoly, just playing football manager and one of my players scored a last minute consolation goal against FC Shitsville"
Roly "is he any good?"
Driesen "same standard as the others I've hooked you up with"
Roly "Ok, it doesn't really matter anyway. Is he match fit?"
Driesen "No out for 2 months"
Roly "No problem, that's no big deal, we can just play him whilst he's injured. What's the transfer fee?"
Driesen "undisclosed"
Roly "Done Deal. Get him contracted to me rather than the Cloob. If he turns out to be shite, it doesn't matter we can just sell Haribo on the cheap"
Driesen "you mean Aribo"
Roly "Oh is that his name? I must remember to get to a game one day. anyway gotta go, got a delivery of Duct tape arriving soon"8 -
"Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the signing of…
The official unveiling of a new player at The Valley can trigger a number of emotions. For supporters, intrigue, expectation and excitementshock, anger and disbelief spring to mind; a wish to see their newest recruit in a red shirt for the first time."
“When all is positive, we go in and make an offer to the player’s club,” says CEO Katrien Meire, with the bid being officially lodged by Club Secretary Parkes.
“In terms of valuation, we have an internal document that we go by where we look at similar deals, a player’s age and contract length. You benchmark."
Presumably Piotr was benchmarked against Robert Lewandowski, on the basis that they are both Polish and play up front.6 -
First, we’ll identify an area where we think we need to strengthen or an area where we think we might be about to lose someone,” says Robinson.
We’ll draw up a list of six players; normally two from our U23s and four buys all at different levels. There might be a top one – the one you see as the best – and then you can categorise the rest.
Sounds like the very hyped Southampton Black Box type role... i.e. Even before they lose a player they know who they can replace him with should the worst happen - Although they appear to start the process a lot sooner than us.1 -
Having lost Fonte to West Ham, and Van Dijk to a serious injury it looks like Soton were a bit slack in their centre back forward planning as they now look very thin in that area!ForeverAddickted said:First, we’ll identify an area where we think we need to strengthen or an area where we think we might be about to lose someone,” says Robinson.

If only certain people has listened to certain other people 3 years ago......3

It's only taken three years of unmitigated stupidity and incompetence for them to catch on to the absolute basics of scouting and signing players. Are we expected to be impressed that they're finally trying to do their jobs properly?21

No mention of Scarfy in the article though. Thought he was one of the more integral parts of the whole process.6

Hallelujah. Three years to get back to how a normal club operates. All the manager needs now is an owner willing to invest in the first team, in a serious attempt to move up the League, otherwise we are scouting in Poundland.Henry Irving said:http://www.cafc.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/charlton-athletic-football-club-valley-review-feature-3566419.aspx

That's normal in any club that is structured properly. Southampton have a puffed-up name for it.ForeverAddickted said:First, we’ll identify an area where we think we need to strengthen or an area where we think we might be about to lose someone,” says Robinson.

Looks like we've re-introduced a standard operating procedure after the abysmal attempt at introducing a moneyball-type operation, organised by a Belgian O level student who has never played a football match in his life, installed by an owner with more money than sense and trying to be clever.7 -

Brentford use a scientific database recruitment process, indeed Warburton left because he and the club disagreed about how far this should go.1

Really excellent article. They appear to have forgotten to mention Thomas Driesen, how remiss.3

The club appear to be putting many thing right.
Next give Meire the chop and replace the hopelessly inadequate, with a proper CEO who has the ability to run a professional football club !5 -

They go to watch players physically. Wow, how ever did they come up with something as revolutionary as that?1
