Rip.
He was brought by Mullery and was preferred to Johns in the first game away at Luton which we lost 3-0. Nicky returned for the next game and Phillips's only other game was away at Leicester. Unfortunately we lost that game as well 3-1 . He did play at the Valley twice for Chelsea a 1-1 draw in 1976 and in the famous Mike Flanagan hat trick game a year later .
I work with Tony Lange who took over from the Welsh International as Charlton's number two keeper and was interested that he felt that John was a big influence on his career. Apparently Phillips was exceptionally good at distribution and this was one of the reasons he had played so much for Chelsea and Tony credits him as a big influence on that part of his game.
This is the official Chelsea tribute .

Nicky Johns was a brilliant keeper for us, for many years, and three times POTY. I'm not surprised. It's still very sad to lose someone so young though.alan dugdale said:Surprised he only played twice for us.
