Happy Birthday Homer!

30 years ago today The Simpson's were first screened.

Has had some minor blips in quality along the way but overall has been fantastic and shows the lie that Americans don't get irony and sarcasm.

I used to watch The Simpsons most evenings until my other half sucked the joy out of me made me grow up. My favourite episode was when Homer helped Hank Scorpio take over the world. The Italy/France debate still makes me chuckle.

Favourite one for me is when Bart becomes a daredevil skateboard jumper and after completing some long jumps decides to jump a canyon. Homer decides to do the jump himself to show Bart how dangerous it is and then halfway through, believing he has made the other side, he falls into the canyon. And the medics then hoist him up to the ambulance, banging his head all the way up, which then crashes into a tree and drops Homer back down the canyon.

  • Blips? It's been dreadful for about 15 years.

The first 15 years it's genius.

Can't suggest a favourite episode as the selection is too large.

The old classics are very good. The new ones....forgettable and the humour gradually became unoriginal, predictable and repetitive. Still worthwhile though.

I like the one when Flanders and homer become best Friends until Flanders realised he made a mistake.

The one where they go vagas is good too.

Most episodes where Moe, Apu or principle skinner were the lead characters, I always found to be pretty good.

    Love it, still do

One of my favourite episodes is the chilli cook off one where Homer hallucinates

Another great one is looking into the future when Lisa is POTUS and Smell ya Later is the new goodbye

Many of the Treehouse of Horrors are a decent watch too

There's not been a decent episode in 15 years?

Jeez you're a tough audience but I admire your perciverence to sit through 15 years of a show you consider dreadful to prove the point.

I suspect you haven't watched for the last couple of years - I think it's brilliant once again.

Smithers: Sir, the designers are here with some prototypes for your casino.

Brit: Gentlemen, I give you Brittania! Gambling with all the glitz and glamour of the British Isles. Best of all, the waitresses and showgirls are all real Brits -- fresh from the streets of Sussex, they are.

    Woman: Freshen your drink, Guv'ner?

    Burns: Get out.
  • I think the Be Sharps may have been my favourite episode, but there have been so many classic moments. The land of chocolate sequence, etc etc

I've been known to reference the Simpsons as ways to explain life's lessons. I love the early years, always was in front of the TV at 6 on BBC 2 to catch the latest episode.

    Happy birthday Simpsons.

I'm basically a simpsons quoting encyclopaedia. I don't think anything else on telly has had as much influence on me as a person.
  • Mr Plow is an amazing episode.

"So before the crash you were at Moe's - this is an establishment of some kind?"
*Don't tell him you were at a bar! Well what other kind of place is open at night?*
"I was at a pornography store. I was buying pornography."
    *Swish*

Just pop in every now and again to shake my head at the utter shit they produce.

Should of been binned years and years ago but with a lot of American stuff they bleed every last penny out of it.

Further to that if you look down the thread the people's favourites are all in the first 12/13 years. I think that's a relevant point.

Ffs spoiler alert please. Was about to start box set from episode 1 and now it's been completely ruined.

    "See my vest",
    The softball one,
    And stonecutters.

Will be a different 3 if I'm asked tomorrow.

Too many favourite episodes to pick one but yeah tend to agree earlier seasons were my preferred when the stories had morals alongside the laughs.

One favourite moment though is when Homer has the BBBQ (Lisa the Vegetarian) -
You don't win friends with salad
The pig shooting off "it's still good, it's still good"

I've got the box sets for seasons 1 - 17 but annoyingly they've said they're not releasing any further seasons as they believe the medium to be dying out and people can watch it on streaming instead.
    Not happy!

I met some Hipster in Hackney a week back. something reminded me of a Simpsons episode (we were talking about Russia and I mentioned about yeah I don't trust Putin. I started talking about an episode where Russia have fooled everyone thinking they were all nice but then say that's what we wanted you to think. next thing you know they call themselves Soviet Union in the UN and during a peace parade outside the Kremlin all the floats of teddy's and candles have tanks and missiles popping out of them. the old red flag comes out, the Berlin wall gets put back and Lenin rises from the dead.) and he said to me he has never seen an episode of the Simpsons. I asked him "why and how?" he said "TV bores me" I walked away.
