Robinson: "Fans have their Charlton back."

He said this after the game. Am I the only one offended by that?

Nope the fans had a good day, if he gives us 45 more like it and we get new owners then Karl, I make you right!

He probably spends his spare time on another Forum and thinks having our Charlton back means commitment to the shirt.

They did really well on Saturday and to give him some praise, it's a long time since we've seen a Charlton side fight for each other like that.

Having said that, it's one game. A season consists of 46 games and anything less than top 6 is a failure.

Right I think he meant that we saw a really good team performance in which the players showed both skill and hard work. And he's right in that regard. And only the most cynical amongst us would say there isn't a different feeling about this season and this team than there has been for a while. But as mentioned above, we won't "have our Charlton back" until the owners leave.

I think it's a naive comment on his part, one which he shouldn't have made but I think we can understand what he meant. But I think he'll be pilloried as the devil for making it.

I really like the bloke but wish he hadn't said that. Maybe he can start saying it when we win the league.

  • Nice of him to say but I doubt he knows exactly what he is saying, especially after one game. Might be a little premature there Karl, but I hope you know something most of us don't.
For me, having Charlton back, means being competitive and not this far down the leagues.

Back it's never gone anywhere for me
  • Not the worse words he's uttered since he came onboard but merely highlights his arrogance IMHO.

You're not in our gang yet, Karl.....

    ...but keep trying.

It means us all pulling together in an upwards direction - definitely premature but a good aspiration for Karl to have - but he has to appreciate it can only be an aspiration until it actually happens. What we have at this moment, is a significantly better squad than we had last season but still containing some gaps. Promotion is a possibilty though - that can't be argued. But we still have an owner who at best takes no interest in us and at worst insults us and a CEO who is out of her depth - We have lost thousands of fans and we are still in League One- we are a long way from getting our Charlton back.

Karl, we'll let you know when we have our Charlton back yeah.
  • KR has watched his team pull off a great result and some of you nit pick over one comment that he makes, maybe for some supporters they do have their Charlton back.

Probably the ones that never acknowledged they were in danger of losing it in the first place.....

....and have always believed that Roland was the Messiah .

    Yeah, right.

    Well put.

Also, despite my earlier cynical comment I'm glad that the reactions thus far haven't been too over the top and that people seemingly understand what he was trying to say, even if it was inarticulate, naive, and inaccurate.
  • Had for the first time on Saturday wondered if there was more to this man than I had previously imagined.

Then he comes out with this after one good result.

    Idiot.

Pretty big comment though, after the first game against one of the lesser European giants.

The only over the top reactions since Saturday are by those who are having orgasms after a 1-0 home win against the mighty Bristol Rovers.

To be fair to Karl, I doubt he has been at a rocking Valley - a few of you younger posters may not have experienced what our Charlton was then either. It did feel like we were getting it bacjk in the last League One game of that season! It is difficult when you go to current home games - I look around in a dreamy haze and the ghosts are there!

Powell knew what it was because he was there at the time. Watch you tube and see a team of absolute heroes like Robbo and SuperClive sweating blood for the shirt and fans creating an atmosphere repected by the likes of Alex Ferguson. That is your target Karl. It started in the Championship and getting our Charlton back is a trajectory to the top - we have to get promoted first, but when Chrissy used the words as a manager, we were on that upward trajectory - everybody was pulling in the same direction - we can only speculate what would have happened had the financial wheels not come off in that second season back in the Championship.

oh Fanny that is so wrong, I could say more but as I wasn't there on Saturday and only listened to the commentary I am probably not in the best place to argue the point.

@MuttleyCAFC post is illustrative of the chasm between Powell and Robinson. Powell knew everything that we had gone through as Addicks because he had been there with us on our rise and seen the fall. He'd earned the right to tell us we were heading back in the right direction and understood implicitly what 'our' Charlton means to us.

Robinson's nowhere near in a position to tell us what we should be feeling about the club at the moment. Maybe it was just an off the cuff, silly remark as he's wont to making all too regularly but he needs to learn to shut up, keep out of the dispute with RD, win matches and more than anything let his football do the talking.

I've long given up caring what Robinson has to say quite frankly.

Just keep winning Karl, we'll let you know when we've got our Charlton back.

Did he really use those words?

If so, then a remarkable thing to say at the start of the season and it would be a further indication that Robinson doesn't actually understand what it means to be a fan.

Supporting the Club and interacting with it is a lifetime affinity which goes beyond purely results (although they help) but extends to a feeling of unity with fellow fans and in placing a sense of trust in those running the Club that they are doing so for the right reasons.

However, fans now stand divided in their reactions to the past 3.5 years of the Regime ownership and it can be argued that Duchatelet and Meire have seriously undermined the foundations upon which the relationship between Club and fan is built.

Meire clearly still views fans primarily as customers consuming and reacting to an array of products of which the football is one major component (whilst she continues to build up her footballing admin profile and standing). Then there is Duchatelet with his own peculiar idea of what constitutes a true football fan - something like a hybrid rugby follower/hospitality guest/ jolly good fellow well-met, who ideally enjoys the odd post-match tea-dance.

So, no Karl, we haven't got Our Charlton back. In fact I recall the spirit of the Club being buried in a coffin by the fans themselves some time back and it is they, the fans, who will determine when they have got their Charlton back - not you.

PS This posting will look a bit silly if he didn't say it......but if he did...........!!!

Powell also said those words on the promtimf of the fans. If I remember correctly.
