In Bermuda, which is home. I must have an attraction to storms!

    Sarasota is a vacation home.

Thanks for all the messages of support and hope that those on here similarly impacted, plus relatives/friends of fellow CL members, remain safe.

British spirit my friend, keep the upper lip nubile

I can't imagine what you are dealing with, not least from your nearest and dearest being terrified but also knowing something is on the horizon. Don't let the stocks of starchy carbohydrate snacks or alcohol drop low
  • Looks like Miami may not be hit as hard as feared

Sounds like the storm surge on the gulf coast which is Fort Myers and Naples is predicting a 10 to 15 feet storm surge. That is not above sea level but 10-15 feet of water above where you are standing. Scary stuff.
  • I have flown a kite in worse.
  • Stay safe out there all of u,and wishing people who have families & friends out there at this time all the best of luck...praying it all dies down soon
  • Just picked out this random live web cam at Mallory Square, Key West. Still some modern day 'Canutes' around at the waters edge. Getting choppy, stay safe everyone.

Sorry you're caught up in this. My son evacuated from the Stuart area to Jacksonville last night up Interstate 95, ( took him all night) and will still need to go further, he thinks. One problem is he has a dog with him, and few hotels will take pets. Like everyone else, we just have to cross our fingers and say our prayers. Latest I hear is that there will be strengthening back to a cat 5 before it comes ashore. Best of luck.

Hope he's okay limey. Have friends making the journey north from Jax with kids and pets. They've posted lots of pictures of them just sitting on the highway.
Thanks SD, he's got a B&B in Savannah from tomorrow, hoping they don't get evacuated from there.
Savannah was evacuated too, so my son had to keep driving, just checked into a Holiday Inn in Aiken, South Carolina, long day, but safe.

It's all very scary, but I think it's worth remembering what Irma is up against when it tries to take on Florida:

Sun 0310 (0810 UK time). The speed of movement of the hurricane means that wont hit here in Miami for about another 3 hours.

The streets are totally empty of ppl or moving vehicles, apart from the occasional reassuring police car. A curflew is in place to deter looting (we are located in a very poor area of Miami). We are experiencing heavy winds and heavy rain.

The single biggest cause of deaths in hurricanes is water surge (78%). We are, at least, in an area away from the main waterways in Miami, hence the reason why our hotel is still open.

So far we still have all amenities such as water and electricity, but as I said the hurricane is still some hours away.

Stay safe Peter and good luck.

My mother in law has been moved to the 2nd floor of her building in Naples as flooding is inevitable. They seem to be well staffed and organised. Spoke to my brother in law last night, he says the place is crazy, people fighting, armed looting reported in his neighbourhood. He was thinking of driving inland to stay with family as the direct hit on Naples means major structural damage is a given. They are predicting days without power in that area. He wasn't keen to go into a shelter as the concern there is crime and getting stuck in there for days.
  • Hope all affected stay safe. Can't imagine what it's like.

Thanks Nug. Sadly the reports here is that Naples will take a hit. BinL was wise to avoid a shelter. I wa in one for a few hours; it was an extremely intimidating and unhygenic environment. Hope your family gets through it.

Peter - if it's possible, you could contact the BBC and give real time experiences of the hurricane and see how many times you can mention Charlton life as your solace?
    Stay safe.
