No way were fans consulted and their reaction measured and acted upon. It feel like they must have been shown a choice between the new design and this:
...but the new design scraped it, just!
Seriously this all feels like one hectoring eager beaver who thought they had an ace idea and proceeded to shove it down everybodys throats brooking no dissent, and if any doubts emerged it was too late down the road.
