I really think Weaver is the least of our problems. It's at the other end we have the issue which is why I "chuckled" when Pards complained about the goal being offside. We actually need to score to win games and a string of 0-0's is not going to get us in the play offs.

Play offs = The definition of an optimist, I'd be happy with mid table with a decent home record.

Weaver wants a response
Nicky Weaver has urged his Charlton teammates not to dwell on Tuesday night's defeat to Crystal Palace, and to instead turn their attentions to returning to winning ways against Ipswich Town on Saturday (3pm).

On a bitterly frustrating evening for the Addicks at Selhurst Park, Craig Beattie grabbed the only goal of the game on the hour mark to secure the win for the Eagles and condemn Charlton to a second successive loss.

Beattie, on loan from West Bromwich Albion, ghosted in at the far post to head a deep cross from Ben Watson past Weaver and into the bottom corner of the net to seal the three points for Palace and send the Addicks further down the Championship table.

The result was the first time in 12 years Charlton have lost to their South London rivals, but, emerging from a disappointed away dressing room, Weaver tried to remain upbeat.

Weaver told the official website: "Obviously, we're very disappointed, there wasn't much in the game but they got the crucial goal and we didn't have an answer after that. I thought we battled well, did well in the first half and coped with a lot of pressure early on.

"We feel as though we could have come away with something but, at the end of the day, the lad's scored a great header, and although we had a fair bit of possession, we didn't create many chances.

"But we've got to stick together. I don't think we're playing too badly, we just need the rub of the green and to put a chance away, and hopefully we can turn it around against Ipswich on Saturday."

He continued: "Our fans came in their numbers tonight, there must have been nearly 3,000 there and the players appreciate that. It's disappointing for them but I can guarantee them it wasn't for lack of effort or lack of trying that we got beaten.

"We did the best we could but the game hinged on that one bit of quality and that was the difference between the two teams."

It was a busier night than Weaver would have liked - the shot-stopper had to make several good saves as well as deal with a whole host of corners and set-plays from Watson.

The hosts also shook the Addicks' crossbar on two occasions, but Weaver said: "They had a lot of corners and a lot of free-kicks which they were whipping in, but I thought we coped with that very well.

"We had good possession and good territory but we never really capitalised on that. There are no problems in the dressing room, though, and we'll come out fighting on Saturday."

Charlton were eager to return to winning ways at Selhurst Park after Saturday's 2-1 reverse at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

But - bar a cross-cum-shot from Hameur Bouazza - the Addicks never really tested Julian Speroni in the Palace goal, and Weaver admits it is vital the Addicks bounce back when they host Ipswich in SE7 this weekend.

He stated: "We're not going to let ourselves get too down and the good thing about the Championship is that the games come thick and fast, so we've got a big game against Ipswich.

"They beat Barnsley but they've been struggling, so we've got to put this defeat behind us and win, and then hopefully this loss can be forgotten a bit.

"Losing at home to Wednesday knocked the stuffing out of us, but we felt confident coming here [to Palace]. We had a gameplan which we stuck to in the first half. The game then opened up a bit more. But the difference was the lad's put a great cross in and they've scored a great header, and I suppose the game hinged on that bit of quality."

Charlton will go into the game with the Tractor Boys in 17th place, and Weaver admits that will put added pressure on the Addicks to get the three points this weekend.

"There's pressure on every game to get three points, but especially so after picking up nothing against Sheffield Wednesday and Palace," he stated.

"The players we've got in that dressing room aren't a bottom half of the table side, but the reality is that's where we are and we've got to turn it round, start picking some points up and start picking them up soon."

Weaver has not done much wrong all season ..... and most games seems to bring off a wonder save or 2.
Credit where it's due, he's been consistant.
