Good on him, I thought he was singled out for his lack of aerial domination and the amount of shots he didn't hold onto by the opposition. Really happy to see how well he has played this season and the fact he's in the national squad

Yep agree with this. I singled him out for those flaws and he has me eating humble pie.

Disappointed Pickford got in ahead of him though.

I've loved every minute of seeing Nicky Pope's wonky smile with England this week. I rated him incredibly highly in his last six months with us. He was fantastically quick off his line, his kicking had gotten much better, and he was so quick to release the ball when he had it. But I never thought he'd end up quite this good quite this fast. So happy for him. By all accounts a lovely guy as well.

not sure if its been mentioned anywhere but do we get any further payments due to an England cap ??? we all know KM was a master at transfer negotiations......

I think you are being quite harsh on KM because she did negotiate a financial package with Burnley If Pope played for England.

For every 15 minutes he is on the pitch in an England shirt we have to pay Burnley £10k.

    What a women!!
I wouldn't be surprised if there is a clause that says for every 15mins he plays for England; Roland helps himself to another £10k from the club
Nope. We sold and England keeper for peanuts with no clause for international caps.

In a way I'm glad... Pope could make his debut tonight and if we got a bit more money for him making his England debut then that cash would be straight into Roland's pocket as a last parting gift.

Hopefully he's sitting there realising it was another of his many mistakes!!
  • Speaking of his goalkeeping situation, Southgate said yesterday.

'It's a very tight call, all the goalkeepers have different strengths, but the prerequisite is keeping the ball out of the net.'

    Quite astute eh?

Well that clears up why Joe Hart has been called up

Eh I don't know about that, by the time the payments are made, assuming the timeline on the takeover holds, it seems far more likely that it'd go to the new ownership.

That said, for all the mistakes KM and RD made, I think this is one of the smaller, more understandable ones. Pope clearly had a bright future when he left here, but I don't think anyone, myself included who rates him very highly, thought he'd be in an England squad within 18 months.

Great to see Nick getting nominations for the Football Writers' Association Player of The Year.

Must admit it is times like this I wonder if it wasn't for Roland if he would still be one of ours.

My sentiment is more a ponderance if we could have kept him a bit longer than we actually did. Still we got to see a premier league star of the future for a few moments.

    *sort of

It will be a national disgrace if he isn't at least on the plane to Russia (and I think he should be starting).

Nick and Ashley Barnes was on Goals on Sunday this week and Barnes said Pope deserves Burnley's player of the year.

Looks like Nick is going to Russia if Joe Hart is being left out.

A great achievement for Nicky Pope. All we need is for Shelvey and Lookman (wild card) to be called up and we’ll have a hat trick of ex-Charlton players. I agree with the sentiments in this article - https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2018/may/15/gareth-southgate-england-world-cup-principles?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Sky Sports just stated they believe Nick Pope will be announced in the England squad. Congratulations to him. He deserves it after a good season with Burnley.

    well done Nick
Hope that CAFC will now receive a big payment from Burnley - ah forgot that Daisy did the sale.
Expect we'll pay Burnley a bonus for loosing him to the England squad

Really happy for him, but lets not re write history of how good he was for us. He blew hot and cold, and although occasionally fantastic (mainly at the end of his Charlton carear) he also had some real shockers. I don't think anyone would have predicted he'd be in the world cup squad
  • Great news for Nick Pope,so pleased for him.A hard-working diligent young player now receiving proper recognition.

So hands up anyone who predicted Nick would be an England Keeper of the future during his time at Charlton? No one? Of course not. I certainly didn't.

    Did he make mistakes? Yes.

Was he unfairly treated by some sections of our fans including on here? Yes I think he was. I can remember arguing that he had the makings of a decent keeper and being told that he would never make it in a million years.

It shows that confidence built on belief in you by the Manager is so important. What did Burnley's coaching staff see in Nick that many fans here could not see? I always thought his height would help him. He is a little rangy but that makes him likely to be more agile IMHO.

He has seized his chance with Heaton's injury and shown the promise that I personally saw in him and truly taken a massive leap forward.

He is 3rd choice but I don't think he's far off 1st to be honest.
