The Valley turf

I'm laying some grass and got to wondering whether anyone knows, out of interest, exactly what kind of grass seed makes up the Valley turf? Is there an FA sanctioned grass seed?

I'm laying Bermuda grass (funnily enough), which is good for golf and sports because of its durability. Don't think it will grow in England tho. It likes the humudity and high heat.

I used to sell grass seed. I seem to remember that hardwearing seed contained a significant proportion of perennial ryegrass. Finer grass seeds includes strong creeping red fescue, slender creeping red fescue, Chewings fescue and browntop bent.

I've no idea what mix they use for the Charlton pitch though, although at least one type of Bent may have been used a year or so ago......:o)

If you're on an island though, the maritime effects of the weather would probably dictate what to sow plus the climate generally.

So, it's likely a type of hard wearing rye then. I might go and throw some rye in with the Bermuda and see what happens. That's the kind of crazy guy I am.

Now if only I could find a suitable timber for my fence ;-)

If it's Bermuda then surely it's "short" grass.

It will definitely be ryegrass! When I was a kid, I did my work experience at Highbury as the groundsman' assistant & got to learn a few secrets of the trade. :-)

Palace's pitch is supposed to be one of the best.

Something to do with being well fertilized by all the sh*t that's played on it.
