There are many examples of teams that are too good to go down being relegated.
On paper the squad looks fine but that is not good enough.0 -
No team has ever been "too good to go down".

I think people are being a bit too dramatic. Yes we're not very good at the moment but there is no way we're 1 of the 3 worst teams in this division.0

How self-defeating is that?
Look, we've another chance to win on Saturday, against a team as in consistant as ourselves.
And should we win, we go from 17th to about 9th in one move.0 -

This is a very even division, a bad run puts you in danger of going down but conversely a good run puts you in with a chance of play-offs or better.
Pardew's job is to ensure that we have more good than bad runs over the course of 46 matches.0 -

There are cause for concern all over the pitch.
Imo we haven't a decent full back in our squad. despite people not rating fortune, we are/will miss him. Our wingers turn up once a month. Even if varney and gray get 25 goals between them, who's gonna get the other 30 to keep us out of a relegation fight. We still have yet to take a point off any team that was in this division last year.

We beat Reading 4-2 who went to the league leaders, Wolves, who beat us, and battered them in their own back yard.
It's a very fine line between success and failure in this league.0 -

I'm not trying to be a doom and gloom merchant, just stating the obvious. As as been said elsewhere, we weren't at the races yesterday. I thought after 10 mins that 4-5-1 wasn't working. We didn't seem to be that much more effective against Sheffield Wednesday. Wolves were a good team and fully deserved to come out on top. The reality is that unless something suddenly gels, either on the pitch or in Pard's head. we are, at best a mediocre side and relegation is a possibility.
So, are we too good to go down? No.0 -
There'll be folk on here claiming the league is in the bag if we have a couple of good wins, so I take it all with a pinch of salt. We're too good to go down, BUT if we persist with the tactics we did last night we will be too poor to stay up.0

did u not watch the game they had 2 chances and scored both, if gray scored would of won by 4 or 5.0 -

Yes I watched the game, and yes, their two goals were fairly individual efforts. Like last night though, I didn't think we were anything special. and didn't really control the game. When we beat Palace at home in February, we looked a good bet to make the play-offs and they looked like they were heading for a mid-table finish - and it didn't quite work out like that.
We've not even reached 10 games yet, so there's still a very long way to go.
And obviously, given our recording at finishing each season so strongly......ah, may be not.0 -

Played 12 Lost 7. Scored 12 and we have a top scorer (excluding pens) with 2.
That's pretty consistent and if we carry on like that we will be fighting relegation. The only way forward is to change the system and personnel because we've given too many players enough time to prove themselves.0 -
I think that we need something to change, we are constantly coming out second best in games, that results in one thing! Before the game yesterday I knew we would lose, and I am a massive optimist, looking forward to Tuesday though and hopeful a much more competitive match.0

I really don't think the home form is the main issue. We're never going to win all our matches at the Valley but at least we have put in some decent performances.
Away from home, however, we've failed to score in 8 of our last 11 matches and that is indicative that we are either too negative or the players that are being picked aren't up to it. Or a combination of the two.0 -
It is also very boring for the fans, not scoring in 8 of the 11 must get the alarm bells ringing?0

Our current league position is a reflection of our performance this season so far. If we continue to play this kind of below average football we will end this season about where we are now. Relegation is a possibility.
On the other hand if you are going to have a bad run of results this is the stage of the season to have it. There's a lot of football to come.0
