Great character actor0 -
Always played the support role but often stole the scene, the sign of a very good actor.

Great actor but responsible for possibly the lowest point in my life. In the early 90s I was an impoverished journalism student in Essex and working in a long forgotten rubbish supermarket called Leo's in a town called Great Dunmow. I had to wear a terrible 'uniform' and stack shelves. One evening I was on my knees stacking very cheap dog food (Chappie I believe) onto a bottom shelf. At the time Lovejoy (anyone remember that?) Was filming in the area. Near closing time Dudley Sutton who played Tinker came in the almost empty supermarket and strolled casually down the dog food aisle. He was lost in his own thoughts - maybe learning his lines - and proceeded to tread heavily on my heel and ankle causing me to yelp with pain. He looked down at me disdainfully as my eyes watered with pain and humiliation. No words were spoken. No apology forthcoming. I knew my place. I reflect on this as a low point in my life. Ie being trodden on by Dudley Sutton while wearing a horrendous supermarket uniform, on my knees, shovelling cheap dog food onto the bottom shelf of a low ranking supermarket. Dudley Sutton would have forgotten the encounter within seconds. I still carry it. Why Dudley. Why?12

Loved him in Lovejoy and great in Porridge too RIP1

Was great as Danny Dyer’s grandad in The Football Factory

And a fine performance in the Sweeney amongst many other roles. Lovely words on Twitter from Chris Jury who played Eric in Lovejoy.
Dudley was basically not out of work from the late 60’s until his sad demise.1 -
