Not sure about the bars but the cushy life has been going on for years. The company I used to own had contracts in most of the big UK prisons and you would be amazed what goes on.
Three meals a day
Games Rooms
Craft Centers
Well stocked Library's
Well equipped gyms
All of them have Mosques
42" TV's
Sky
Play-stations
Plenty of drugs getting in as the screws would rather the inmates be high and content.
Doncaster prison even had a room off of the visiting center where couples were allowed to have sex. This really blew me away when I visited

I would also think that this would be a limited trial for a certain profile of low risk offenders.
As others have said we should be looking to try and stop people re-offending when released.
I think we generally have an opinion that prisons are like holiday camps......and I’m pretty sure that’s not generally the case.11 -

Erm,no,obviously not but its a prison. Theyre not in there for being shining lights of the community. We have a massive problem with homelessness, often people who have served their country,i think the money being provided by the taxpayer to make wrong'uns lives better in prison could be better used to get people off the streets.se9addick said:Would you prefer that they do reoffend?

Certainly prisons are now an issue with years of underfunding on everything from building stock to staffing levels but I still seriously doubt that prison life is cushy. The penal systems around the world are massively different and some of the better results in terms of repeat offending are achieved by the “more enlightened “ systems where prisoners are treated with what some would view as a very light hand. If this initiative produces results then it has to be a good thing.

Is making prisin nicer really going to make people less likely to go back?se9addick said:Would you prefer that they do reoffend?
I doubt it.3 -

There's an article there (admittedly written from an American perspective) about the Norwegian Prison system that has shown massive improvements in recent times. Society as a whole has clearly benefited, it's something I'd be tempted to encourage trying here far more. Maybe that's whats going on a bit?

I hope this new liberal culture in our prisons is more successful than the similarly minded changes that have occurred in our classrooms.1

Im pretty sure this opinion of prisons being easy is a tad out dated now, unless you think rape and taking a battering every other day are easy.eaststandmike said:Not sure about the bars but the cushy life has been going on for years. or prisoners could recieve an education and therefore be less likely to reoffend, keeping them busy stops the drugs and suicides being so high.Redvalleyeast said:

I understand there is a down side to everything but if a person committed a serious crime against me or a loved one and I heard they were being battered and raped inside I would be chuffed to bits.
It is easy to avoid such humiliation, behave yourself and stay on the outside.1 -

I would imagine that these measures haven’t been taken for the sake of it, rather they are at recommendation of people that do know what they’re talking about.4 -
Well then thank god you're not in charge of policy, because you're more interested in revenge than improving society. The data shows that where prisons are harsh and brutal recidivism is higher. Where prisons are more focused on mental health support, work training, drug addiction care and planning for life after prison it's massively reduced. Ultimately this means that the future potential crime against you or your loved one is less likely to ever happen if recidivism is lower. This is a good thing. That's why instead of revelling in the rape of prisoners, prisons are trying to make changes to reduce crime based on studieseaststandmike said:

Not all crime is serious or all sentences fair !
...as for your rape comment, it's scummy at best. Even my Mrs who has been abused as a child and an adult wouldn't wish that on anyone1 -
So why don’t we try to reduce the reoffending rate, which is astronomical, and then spend the money we’ll save on dealing with the consequences of crime on the homeless?Redvalleyeast said:

Also people to think and realise that some of these prisoners were homeless junkees before they got sent down too !1 -
Lad (can't recall his surname...1st name John) I used to go to Charlton with (from Abbey Wood) became a prison guard....last time I saw him he was working down at Bristol prison....wonder if he is on CL ?.0

A simple remedy would be that instead of going to prison they should all be shot, that would reduce the reoffending rates by about 100%.12

Couldn't they just have it off in their own cells?eaststandmike said:Not sure about the bars but the cushy life has been going on for years. The company I used to own had contracts in most of the big UK prisons and you would be amazed what goes on.

Well stocked Libraries? Again, what is wrong with that?
All of them have mosques? Why not, they have a variety of Christian churches too (often the same space). Dog whistle stuff.
Some of the other stuff depends on the category of prison, not all prisoners have access to these. And there are arguments for and against some of them.
The drugs are a huge problem but not legal.
Lots of things wrong with our penal system but food, books and prayer ain't the issue.
And yes, I have spent time in prison (for work, not as a resident).11 -
