    Our last cup finalist.

    RIP
  • Very sad to see a 1946 legend and WW2 RAF veteran go. The generation that put CAFC on the map has now passed as I am sure he was the last member of the 46/47 FA Cup teams left.

Was 97. I’m on a catamaran in Barbados and have met a close friend. Sounds a great bloke. Do we know him as Bert?

As Len says, that was Herbert Turner. Not being funny @masicat but are you sure?

I’m here with his daughters partner who has come for the cricket. He’s trying to get a flight home this week.

Arthur served in the RAF during WWII as a rear gunner in Wellington bombers.

He was shot down over the bay of Biscay and spent nine hours in a dinghy before being rescued. He was the only survivor of the crew.

Arthur will be best remember as the first amateur player to appear in the FA Cup final for 20 years when he played for Charlton v Derby in the 1946 cup final.

Very sad news to hear the passing of Arthur, he and his generation, who played both at the Valley and defended their country against tyranny have left a legacy that will never be forgotten.

Had dementia. Apparently spent many years reminiscing about his pals from the war. Sang every day. His friend here tells me one of the nicest men you could meet. Anyone here could sort inviting the family to the valley ?

Mick E has been in contact with the family for a while and he is aware of the news.
