In light of the sad death of Ranking Roger two versions of this classic.
Do you prefer the Smokey Robinson and the Miracles original or the Beat cover.
No other versions considered.

Sorry, as a soul purist, it's Smokey Robinson & The Miracles for me. Originally an album-only track, would you believe.2
-
Smokey....no contest.1

As Martin Fry sang - It's Smokey's Tears!1

Smokey. And I suspect The Beat would agree. Nothing wrong with their version though!3

Smokey. Loved the Beat but Smokey's version is an absolute classic.

General rule of thumb for life, if there are two versions of a song, and one is a Mowtown record - the Motown one will be the better one.

Smokey by a long way ......
Tracks of my tears has a lot of good covers0 -
Got to be smokey, though I like both. This live version is quality, and I never knew that Romesh Ranganathan was one of the miracles

Appreciate that not everyone likes Motown (Although this actually came out on the Tamla label in the States) but really, no one could better the Smokey version.1 - Sponsored links:

Sacrilegious to suggest any other than the great Smokey Robinson.1

I cant stand either version!, Im scared of clowns.1

Love both. Which I prefer depends on time/place. Love the energy of The Beat's version and the attitude; Smokey's voice and the tremendous bass line just edge it for me at the moment.2

Smokey for me , good version by The Beat though.
