  • He explained on the Back to The Valley video that he got his nickname 'Sailor' because he "had a nautical walk."
    I was never quite sure what that meant, but found it amusing.

    Very sad. Only really played two full seasons for Charlton, immediately before WW2 - then lost six of what should have been his best seasons to fighting the Luftwaffe (despite his nickname, he was an RAF sergeant!). But 21 goals in 47 league games in those two pre-war seasons. Played in the FA cup final v Derby in 1946 but was transfered to Forest a week later, after allegedly having a major bust-up with Jimmy Seed.

    Trust the O/S will get a full tribute up to him sharpest...

    I met Sailor Brown on several occasions, including his appearance to help launch the Valley Party in 1990. He was a big character and never lost his interest in Charlton, despite living a long way away in later life.

    Sorry to hear the news.

    Remember seeing that distinctive 'rolling' gait whenever he came onto the Valley pitch for special occasions,a sad day.

  • Very Sad, he was one of my Dads favourite players from the heydays. My Dad always mentioned Sailor Brown to me when I was kid in the 50's.

    Sad news.

    RIP Sailor, probably the last of our pre World War 2 players to pass on.

    As a youngster I remember my late Grandfather speaking of Sailor in glowing terms.

  • I was lucky enough to meet him acouple of times;
    Always had a smile and a story.

    Another bit of Charlton Athletic has left the building.

    God Bless.
