So where would you strengthen our squad with loans?

    Centre midfield and up front
  • None - buy stronger than we've got or use kids. Sell big wage earners while we can.

A goalscorer and a centre back then they would be worth, but all the loans we get turn out to be no better than what we already have so I don't hold too much hope

    Which centre half is dodgy?

In the 14 league games Fortune has appeared in we have won 4 drawn 6 and lost 4.

In the 12 he has missed we have lost 11 and drawn 1.

So is "Rock" the weak link?

Despite the number of goals we've shipped in i think the problem is that we're so poor up front and in parts of midfield that we're not pressuring other teams and when we do we don't take our chances. Therefore i'd like a couple of new frontmen as i expect a couple to go and a couple of midfielders with one being a hardman type (Bowyer on loan would be nice, although controversial).

Going to be hard to find players that improve the team since we can only get loans or free transfers in.

    Depends what is available really.

We need at least one more centre back, one more winger, and a goalscoring striker or two up front.

We have plenty of central midfielders, but it's really a case of quantity over quality. Though if we can get Racon fit we've got a decent player there, arguably the only CM we have that is comfortable taking the ball forward. Apart from ZZ, but I'm expecting him to leave.

As for Fortune v Hudson, Fortune is the better player, but as I said in another thread his style makes it harder for him to impress. He doesn't go around throwing himself into last ditch tackles, a lot of the time because he never needs to in the first place.

    Manager.
  • I'd be loathe to sign any more loans.

Just tie up what we have eg Murty and McEveley at full-back until May.

Bouazza is a bit of an enigma but we have no other wide left options in truth and he can produce the odd bit of magic, so sign him up for the season. I think he may be staying due to his cup appearance.

I'd then like to buy at least FOUR of our own players - a centre back to contest with Hudson and Fortune, a holding midfielder to complement Racon and better than Holland/Semedo, maybe a decent right winger to put pressure or even replace Sam. These areas would do for a start...

I'd be open to a striker loan until May if the player ticked the right boxes - good record, adaptable, even a touch of quality at this level. I could see the logic in a short-term punt if the player played a part in keeping us up.

Helguson would have been a candidate but of course QPR have bought him now.

We're more likely to get Agyemang I guess...

I am sure as you walk round the training ground, with every cupboard door that you open a striker pops out, despite this abundance of "talent", I would get in a proven goal scorer, we just could not afford to buy one, hence people like Burton come in, no score but cheap

I wonder how many players we really need to bring in. Perhaps we should try the obvious and give a decent chance to who we've got already. How many of us were suprised how well Jonjo played ? We knew he was a good player, but Parky like Pardew refused to play him. I'm not suggesting he should play every game, but for his development he should have featured a lot more than he has. There are other young players who deserve a chance too, rather than this policy of putting older players, who are past their best ,first. Obviously you need some experience in the team, but experience alone wont get us out of trouble without a bit of talent and energy. It seems our best player on Saturday was the one with the least experience.
  • Just seen that Brum may sign Bouazza - add a left midfielder to the list now. A purchase would be the best solution, so that's my four. Striker loan if Murray/Chappell find some money down the back of their sofas. Other than that it's down to Gray, Burton, McLeod and Dickson to save us - discounting Toddy as he never seems to be fit enough. Oh dear.
  • Target man. Big lump. Craig Beatie type, I've no idea who though.

The correct stats for Fortune are not as good as I quoted wrongly from memory earlier.

However the principle still stands that we are better with Fortune than without him this season.

    League games only:

    With JF: P14 W3 D 4 L7

    Without JF: P12 W1 D 3 L 8

We need and I mean desperately a physical horrible shit in the middle of the park, to play alongside Bailey who is a good player but in this division if we have not learned now that all/most the sides that do us are hard to breakdown and are simply well organised in gettin their shape when in defence or loss of the ball. Hudson and Fortune are more than capable at this level however the ability to keep possesion in front leaves themk somewhat hugely exposed

i agree that these Fortune stats are quite good. However, I think they exaggerate his importance as his injury coincidentally coincided with the early stages of our demise. So he featured in games at the start of the season when we doing ok nd then got injured just before we turned completely crap. I don't think he'd have single-handedly been making the difference when it all went tits up, he just happened to be out of the fold then.

That said I think Fortunes certainly good enough for the Championship. However we definitely need to strengthen at centre back as a priority. Having only two recognised centre backs in the squad is ridiculous. Having a realistic alternative might make the ones playing up their game (e.g. i think Hudson's form has tailed off since looking good at the start of the season).

Given our feeble financial situation, I reckon we need to strength in two positions only - centre back and up front (buy a goalscorer not another bloody hold up player). (Except also another left winger if Bouazza leaves)

    We've never replaced Scott Parker.

Even the hallowed Mr Curbishley didn't do that - not easy to find affordable players to do the job, I know. But as big a contribution to our demise as other factors.

And we still haven't replaced him.

not many teams could replace him to be fair, which was why he was worth so much more to us than we would ever get for him on the open market
  • Could someone clear up for me what players we currently have on loan please. We've had so many recently i've lost track. I know Cranie went back. Has Primus gone back? Do we still have Waghorn?

    Waghorn, Murty, Bouazza and McEveley.

Waghorn's here for his second month, we could extend another month, change it to a half season loan, or send him back.

    Cranie, Primus, Gillespie all gone.

Burton signed on a free permanently.
  • A tall Strong fast striker can't give an example though! :)
