Happy St George's Day. The most important day for English people in the calendar.
I hope you're all well, staying safe and looking out for one another.
This great nation has faced challenges in the past and has always come through those challenges. It will do so again, despite its tiny minority of detractors, knockers and naysayers.

In these troubling times i take the greatest of solace from the gift of being born an Englishman.
Happy St George's Day to you all.5 -

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;Or close the wall up with our English dead.In peace there's nothing so becomes a manAs modest stillness and humility:But when the blast of war blows in our ears,Then imitate the action of the tiger;Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage; Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;Let pry through the portage of the headLike the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm itAs fearfully as doth a galled rockO'erhang and jutty his confounded base,Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean. Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,Hold hard the breath and bend up every spiritTo his full height. On, on, you noblest English.Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,Have in these parts from morn till even foughtAnd sheathed their swords for lack of argument:Dishonour not your mothers; now attestThat those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.Be copy now to men of grosser blood,And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,Whose limbs were made in England, show us hereThe mettle of your pasture; let us swearThat you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;For there is none of you so mean and base,That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:Follow your spirit, and upon this chargeCry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'3

And requesting respectful permission to pay due homage to a precious corner of our special and blessed land, namely the Garden County of Kent. Forever Invicta - indeed Unconquered - may our dear beleaguered football club take all heart !!

Basically a St George’s day when an Englishman's home is his castle and he’s at home with the drawbridge raised to keep outsiders away1

England, my England
What have I done for you,
England, my England?
What is there I would not do,
England, my own?
With your glorious eyes austere,
As the Lord were walking near,
Whispering terrible things and dear
As the Song on your bugles blown,
England—
Round the world on your bugles blown!
Where shall the watchful sun,
England, my England,
Match the master-work you've done,
England, my own?
When shall he rejoice agen
Such a breed of mighty men
As come forward, one to ten,
To the Song on your bugles blown,
England—
Down the years on your bugles blown?
Ever the faith endures,
England, my England:—
'Take and break us: we are yours,
England, my own!
Life is good, and joy runs high
Between English earth and sky:
Death is death; but we shall die
To the Song on your bugles blown,
England—
To the stars on your bugles blown!'
They call you proud and hard,
England, my England:
You with worlds to watch and ward,
England, my own!
You whose mail'd hand keeps the keys
Of such teeming destinies,
You could know nor dread nor ease
Were the Song on your bugles blown,
England,
Round the Pit on your bugles blown!
Mother of Ships whose might,
England, my England,
Is the fierce old Sea's delight,
England, my own,
Chosen daughter of the Lord,
Spouse-in-Chief of the ancient Sword,
There 's the menace of the Word
In the Song on your bugles blown,
England—
Out of heaven on your bugles blown!William Ernest Henley

There are countless beautiful people and places in England.
On a day like today I wish I were walking through Lydford Gorge, or schlepping around Brighton.
Any other English lazy sunny day recommendations?0 -
1st St.Georges day I can remember when I can't celebrate with a pint or three down the pub.
Will have to make up for it at a later date.
In the meantime happy St.Georges day to all and stay safe.2 - Sponsored links:

Any other English lazy sunny day recommendations?A walk around Rydal Water ending up by Rydal Mount and gazing on the daffodils in Dora's Field - followed by a couple of pints in The Badger Bar.I'd settle for that on a beautiful St Georges Day like this. Maybe next year.1 -
