Eredivisie side Roda JC are to merge with Dutch second division outfit Fortuna Sittard due to respective financial difficulties.

It is hoped the merger will increase finances by €20million (£18million), and in turn improve their on-field fortunes.

Roda JC are currently 16th in Holland's top flight, while Fortuna Sittard sit 15th in Eerste Divisie.

As of next season, the newly-formed club will play at Roda's Parkstad Limburg Stadion in Kerkrade, based in the Limburg region.

The Fortuna Stadion will then be used as a youth training centre for the club.

How far apart geographically are those two dutch clubs?

Sampdoria (1946) are the product of a merger and so are Newcastle Utd (dark ages).

More recently so are Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Crystal Palace have a merger of Barcelona's kit and Benfica's nickname.

    Millton

    Charlwall
  • There's loads of examples in non-league but I can't see it happening in the professional game as the fans would stop going, and form AFC Palace.

Seriously - If you look at the history of both teams, they have both been created by previous mergers. So it'll be nothing new for the fans I suspect.

Didn't know that. Don't we have some sort of connection with Roda?

Maybe a different attitude in Holland and elsewhere.

Oh and Dagenham and Redbridge and Rushden and Diamonds. League clubs who were formed from merger albeit neither were in the league at the time. Could argue that in the the case of Dagenham helped them get in the league.

Charlton dons - NOT AGAIN- i watched wimbledon for 8 seasons before coming to charlton, when they were no more, for the last 5 and being indoctorinated into supporting them, don't think i could face another club going down the pan!

Think Dagenham and Redbridge were a merger of 2 clubs who had both been through a few mergers previously as well.
Someone with more time on their hands will be able to confirm.

FC Copenhagen was a succesful merger, but generally don't see it working here. Our (proper) fans are too partizan - we'd rather follow OUR shit team than a faceless corporate beast. I remember when Hearts and Hibs tried to merge to compete with the old firm and people went completely mental.

Anyway nobody would want to merge with us...

    LOL

Maybe we could merge with the Royal Oak.

The bar area would be much bigger but the stewards would stamp on your feet on the way in.

wow!......you need to stop going to football. There will be no one left.
  • Dagenham and Redbridge history:

Ilford and Leytonstone merge in 1979 to form Leytonstone-Ilford.

L-I merge with Walthamstow Avenue in in 1988 to become Redbridge Forest.

    With me so far...

Redbridge Forest merge with Dagenham FC in 1992 and Dagenham & Redbridge is formed.

    Ithangyow...

Aahhh, the pre-season friendly with Roda JC in 2001, I remember that! I went to it, great weekend in the Netherlands that was. Couldn't see myself in the picture of the '200 Charlton fans' though, must have been getting a beer at the time.......

Charlton Orient FC, playing at a new stadium in Stratford? I'm thinking Zabeel here. No need to change or merge club colours either.

    Zabeel?

Zabeel were interested in us, and rumour has it they're now interested in being part of a consortium to take over Orient. A later merger with CAFC would see them reach their original objective in a roundabout way.

Ah right, shame that didn't come off, it would have been handy, the money and that. If they come back I hope they sign Kaka, he'd be brill in League One

Does anything still happen with that link? any contact remain? I still keep an eye on Roda's results based on it!

Surely the smaller club are the real victims in a merger, rather than Roda. Fortuna are the ones who are more likely to lose their identity.
