Not a bad way to start the week!10

I’m honestly really surprised by that. I thought the last place he would go would be where the bloke who keeps him out of the Wales team is. Just goes to show that it’s tough out there for free agents. Great news for us21
-
Great cover at right back. Excellent signing. Hopefully he is still motivated after failing to be signed elsewhere.
LB told you it wasn't going to be a striker.14 -
More good news , thought we had missed out on Matthews .11

What a way to start the week. Two Championship standard right backs and another Welsh player - we’re stronger at right back than we were last season.29
-
Well well well. As good as Gunter has been, and last game he was particularly very good - I don't think Matthews is far off him in terms of ability.
Great signing for us.11 -
Pleased about this. I was worried that we wouldn’t get him.
We are turning into a Welsh team, obviously no longer an Irish team.1 -
Excellent news, welcome back Adam.1

Now we’re going to have to decide who are the bigger fans:

Wonder if there'll be the odd occasion where Matthews plays in front of Gunter? Tricky away game perhaps.
Great cover to have in any case.12 -

Just noticed Joe Ledley gets a mention in the Matthews song 😆1

Pleased with this1

Good news a very solid signing and be happy with either starting.0

Condensed season, so many fixtures.Talal said:Wonder if there'll be the odd occasion where Matthews plays in front of Gunter? Tricky away game perhaps.

Be interesting to see how Bowyer play this..
I know Bowyer prefers 3 5 2 Maybe Gunter as a right CB and Matthews as a wingback.

Will make for a fascinating contest to win the starting spot. Gunter has it at the moment and hasn’t really put a foot wrong but Matthews is more than capable of taking it off of him.1

Bit out the blue that one.
Very decent.2 -

I wouldn’t say it’s Bowyer’s favoured formation, but it’s one he uses. He mentioned Gunter being an option at RCB before and Cawley has said it in the above article, it’s a useful option to have.Be interesting to see how Bowyer play this..

The strength of the squad in terms of numbers is so strong. Outside of the obvious striker role, I don’t think I have ever seen a Charlton side with so many strong options / back ups relative to the level they are playing at.
Even the last promotion team from league one..... who were the back ups to the likes of Bielik, Cullen, Aribo?
If we can somehow get a striker in, then there really is no excuse not to go up this year. You just need to look at the other league one squads to realise that minus a BWP or Taylor equivalent, this team has to get out of the league this year.6 -
This is getting ridiculous now. Surely all other 23 teams in the division are looking at our current squad with pure envy. Really pleased to have Matthews back. Got a big tasks trying to get in front of Gunter.
Last season shown we can always go with a back 5 with Matthews & Doughty as full back if Bowyer changes formation at all.1 -
Let’s just hope we don’t sign him again.Scoham said:Just noticed Joe Ledley gets a mention in the Matthews song 😆5 -
Wonder if he will play tomorrow with Gunter being rested?1
-
Blimey that is a pleasant surprise. Very strong at RB now in league 1. Good competition. Pleased with this. Let's keep the winning run going tomorrow night.1
-
Matthews, Purrington, Deji and Pearce, a defence that probably started a Championship game together last season is now probably our back up League 1 defence, wow.34
-
Seems like Matthews waited, like last season, to see what was out there and signed.
Late but possibly no further into the season in terms of games played than last season.
And as he was training with us until a fortnight ago should be fit.
Very solid signing.
And I still wouldn't be surprised to see a striker come in January.26 -
I reckon you could play him right wing. He ain’t a bad crosser of the ball and would give Gunter plenty of coverChunes said:Great cover at right back. Excellent signing. Hopefully he is still motivated after failing to be signed elsewhere.

Yes, I was thinking that. In a tight game or trying to close one out. Also if Gunter played on the right side of a back three with Inniss and Famewo, you could have Matthews play as a wing-back with Maatsen on the other side, particularly if Doughty weren't available. Whatever, gives them both cover and options.Talal said:Wonder if there'll be the odd occasion where Matthews plays in front of Gunter? Tricky away game perhaps.

Can either gunter or Matthew's play anywhere else.0
