Sadly where do we stop with that? Women want equality and changing the size of the goals would probably be the start of a slippery slope. Someone will get offended by it and we end up with a whole different issue.PopIcon said:

Is this the thread where men discuss how well women play a game that the men themselves confess they rarely watch them play and then make pronouncements on how those women will feel about changes that the men imagine will make the women better?

I did once play football with a current Lioness though.
Hopefully Sandgaard will invest in the women's team and we can progress.

The height of a goal hasn't changed since football rules were standardised (1872?). I wonder what the average height of a man was then? Your argument perhaps should be that the goal in a man's game should be increased. Few people think this is a good idea. Let's move on and just work to improve the number of people who play and standard of play.PopIcon said:

There was a time when mens football was similar in standard to the womens game today.
But over the years, mens football became much quicker and athletic than before.
In the same way, look at the ability of the best womens players today compared to a few years ago.
The womens game just needs resources and time - and it will keep advancing.

The next generation of Women footballer's who become top keepers will be nearer to 6 foot. Tennis player still make more money so unlikely to attract too many 6ft plus girls.
Lots of lanky girls will now become keepers.
Hope Solo looked taller than she was but was only 5ft 9in.
Solo played 202 games for the USA national team and kept 102 clean Sheets or shut outs as the Americans call it. She had a great leap so no problem for her.
The USA woman have been the dominant team for the last two decades because the girls have been playing football in school since kindergarten (reception class)
Having watched Women's football for 25 years on TV and have been to England internationals, cup finals and a few WSL matches, the fitness now is improving every season for the top teams.
Don't think you need to make any difference to the goal size. Would be like Turkeys voting for Christmas to have less goals in a game.1 -
If I was head of women's football in the FA I would look to gymnastic clubs. I'd try to identify the tallest girls and sell football to them. There must be a few girls who grow a bit too much to be effective at gymnastics. Then I would get them coached by top keeping coaches. I think that would produce excellent keepers. It is an easy win because it is one area the women's game lags behind in whilst making great strides everywhere else.soapboxsam said:PopIcon said:

the goalkeeping issue is less to do with the size of the goal, its mainly been about the quality and availability of specialised keeper training in the women's game.
Goalkeeping quality declines quickly as you go out of the pro leagues once the quality of coaching declines. The same is true for the Women's game which is mainly part time. The quality of keeping at the top level of the sport is pretty good.1 - Sponsored links:

Great shout on female gymnasts as keepers need to be agile but as It appears that most of our top female gymnasts are around 5 foot maximum so any young girl who is going to be tall has already left gymnastics from a young age.
The younger keepers now are getting specialist coaching when they get into an academy or else go to goal keeping camps that are springing up in school holidays.
COVID-19 has halted this on occasions in the last year.
Chris Kirkland who is 6ft 6in or 1.98m for you youngsters, does a lot of goal keeping coaching since retiring. His Daughter is in the academy at Liverpool (keeper) and hopefully will get near to 6 ft tall while remaining agile. In my areas more and more girls kick a ball above mainly wanting to be the next Vivianne Miedema the goal scoring record breaker: Arsenal 88 goals-84 games.
Netherlands 70 goals-90 games. Only 24 years old so will smash records for years to come barring injuries. Her 20 year old brother plays for Den Bosch in Dutch 2nd tier as a striker.
Some have their gloves and will want to be a keeper. Professional status and better facilities awaits if you can progress.0 -

I'm a big supporter of the women's game and regularly watch on TV and live as well as coaching my daughter's team. I don't think reducing the size of the goals would be quite the backward step some are suggesting. The hurdles example in athletics is a good point. According to Wiki the average heights are 5ft 9 and 5ft 3 respectively so that's a fair difference.2

I've been a season ticket holder for the womens team for the last 3 seasons when they had a relatively tall girl who was a very good keeper. Unfortunately she has moved to Brighton this season. (She returned on loan for a few games.)
The central defenders are tall and experienced.
Unfortunately the appearance of the London Lionesses as a full time professional club resulted in the heart of the Charlton team being ripped out. A good coach left too.
There have been some very good signings but I honestly feel that the team needs new direction.1 -
Interesting hearing your views as you are a season ticket holder. I think I definitely saw the Charlton woman when they peaked.
Kit Graham and liz Ejupi were goal scorers and Katie Startup was the keeper you mentioned who came back on loan from Brighton this season for a couple of months.
Startup is only 21 now and was a good shot stopper. The occasional mistake but no more that Nick Pope did as a young keeper.
The woman's team needs financial backing which has been sadly lacking in recent years to compete with West Ham and Tottenham who are both in the WSL now.
Part time players can only get so far.

Lord knows we need them, cast adrift at the bottom of the table and in danger of relegation, at a time where we there's more and more money in the WSL and the game in general, if TS wants to turn Charlton Athletic into a brand then he'd do well to start with fully integrating the women's team back into the fold and investing heavily in it3
