Widescreen tv frustration

Any of you techies out there able to help with this please? I’m not as stupid as I pretend to be but this one has got me. Widescreen tv. Whats it all about? I’ve paid for a 50 inch Tv so I want a 50 inch picture. I don’t want two or three inch black lines at the top and bottom. Actually, I can cope with it. But Mrs SB can’t and she insists on watching movies etc on “zoom” so that the full screen is occupied but of course the picture looks stupid with stretched faces and missing bits. I get a breather on Netflix as you can’t zoom it (you can but she hasn’t worked it out yet and I’m sayin nuthin!).
Is there a way round this that I’m too stupid to figure? Please don’t say buy a bigger telly.
You can tell I’m bored.

First read that as windscreen.3

Sounds like you either need to change the ratio (which your Mrs might have done with zoom) or there might be different modes. Yours might be on cinema mode0

Picture
Ratio
16:91 -
Some films are filmed in a wider ratio than 16:9, so there will be small black bands at the top and bottom of the screen as well0

You will get the black bars (Letterboxing / Pillarboxing) whenever the native aspect ratio of the content is different to the ratio set on your TV.
This explains it fairly well....

Just set it to auto and it will follow what the programmes are naturally.
