Post Match Thread: Charlton Athletic v Rochdale | Tues 12 January 2021

Well that was certainly eventful. We go 2-0 down and then Chuks immediately pulls one back, but we still end up 4-2 down at half time. The second half was better, and Ronnie Schwartz gets his first goal for the club to make it 4-4. We had the better chances to win it after that, and then Jason Pearce got sent off for a second yellow after a lunge on their keeper, so we were hanging on to some extent but managed to do so.

Will take the point, but that just papers over some ever growing cracks.

We've seen that Aneke can play 90, protect him in training because he surely has to start.

Good for Schwartz to get a goal.

I wonder if TS told Bowyer he needs to play attacking football

Happy with the draw after being 2-0 and 4-2 down.

Aneke had a blinder. Great to see Schwartz score.

Interesting to see the defence line up on Saturday after the late red card tonight.

Chuks could have won it at the end, which would have given him a hat trick!

A very hard fought point, but make no bones about it - 4 conceded against bottom 3 team is pathetic and questions HAVE to be answered!!

I'll take the point but the manager's decisions continue to cost us.

Had we started how we finished (before Pearce was sent to the shadow realm) same formation and fight we'd have smashed Rochdale into next week.

Not sure how I feel about that. I felt this should be the game to stop the rot, but to concede four to the team 18th is pretty poor. At the same time its pleasing to see us come back the way we did.

I think the next Sat-Tues double header could be crucial, anything less then a couple of wins and LB could be on very thin ice, games are running out with promotion slipping away.

  • Hoping Morgan firmly above Gilbey in pecking order now. Also, I imagine Shinnie will be ahead of him when he returns, as will Watson and Pratley. Get Vennings in the mix and hopefully Gilbey never plays for us again. Thats the dream anyway.

Very mixed feelings - and will prefer not to think about that first half currently.

Second half, perhaps partly due to getting the underperforming Gilby off, we looked a complete different team. We sometimes have those 45 minutes - Forest at home, Reading away, MK Dons this season.

Why can't we do that consistently? Probably because we don't play a consistent team and line up for one.

Aneke and JFC played well. Schwartz is a player. First half diabolical, lets never see that or Gilbey again.
  • Saturdays defence is certainly going to look interesting...

Even when we brought it back to 4-4 we showed how much we need to have that enforcer type player in Midfield as whilst Forster-Caskey and Morgan did extremely well that second half there were still periods where a team (in relegation form) waltzed through them.

Still dont think Bowyer should go, we saw second half how he's not lost the dressing room. BUT mistakes like putting Smyth at RWB he has to take responsibility for - Yes I get it that we've got issues with the likes of our injury list but dont shoot yourself in the foot when you dont need to

I don't know what to think about that.

Plus points are the performances from Chuks and Millar and Ronnie off the mark but we should still be beating Rochdale.

2nd half Papered over the cracks.

Before today Rochdale had 2 wins in 13 and were in the relegation zone, we conceded 4 goals in the first half to them, its not good enough and as I say the 2nd half comeback was good but just papered over the cracks

  • Hate to admit this, but I enjoyed that, nice to see the team come back from so many defensive errors. The Aneke and Schwartz started to form a partnership, overall thought we were slightly unlucky not to eon, however Rochdale did look going forward and had it in their game to snatch a winner.

Another definite 3 points lost due to our shit defence
as soon as our 2 defenders are back things should improve.
the problem we now have is everyone in league one knows we leak Goals due to our shut defence including the crap teams.
some great goals from Chucks and Ronnie S
  • One win in eight games and shipping goals - simply not good enough.

Thought the effort from the players was top notch throughout.  So unlucky not to win at the end there. Only let down by the baffling decision to play Smyth at RWB.

But some positives to take. "1 goal chuks" and Schwarz linked well. Millar has an incredible engine and nobody was trying harder. JFC played his best game. Oshilaja was very solid. Schwarz with an incredible finish!

Negatives... Pearce and Gunther shocking. LB forced to change formation halfway through the first half. Again.

I hope we stick with that 4-4-2 but at the same time, I sadly have no hope we will.

But still, we fought back and maybe this is turning the corner.

Need to bank that as a starting point. Williams in midfield gives it a bit of mobility. Chuks can be unplayable. Need to buy another centre half but I think Pearce is the liability more than Deji. Terrible decision to send him off though.  Every player has to go for that!

Tell you what - with the money we get for Alfie, couldn't we try to buy that Baah? Only 17 so can be done within the cap!

How can Bowyer make such fundamental mistakes in formation and selection week after week? Hull, Accrington and today, all bizarre. It's either collective incompetence or no one else in the staff is putting Bowyer right. Or maybe there's a mole in the scouting network feeding duff information about the opposition every week.

Watching Schwartz on Valley Pass he’s come over on his own, his girlfriend isn’t allowed to join him due to the Covid situation.

Weirdly happy with a point at home to Rochdale which, on paper, is a poor result.

A stirring comeback but ultimately another two points dropped, and against a team towards the bottom of the division.

First half a defensive disaster. Quite what drives Bowyer to play players out of position I’ll never know. Tonight’s masterpiece was playing Smyth at right wing back and he was duly torn a new arsehole by a 17 year old who went on to score twice.

Much better in the second half, when we took the game to them. Chuks proved that he can play 90 minutes, scored twice (and nearly got a winner), and it looks like we have finally stumbled across a good striking partnership in Chuks and Ronnie. It ought to be a huge clue but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he plays Bogle and Washington up front on Saturday. I hope I’m wrong.

Jason Pearce is no more than decent at this level but his red card is a disaster given our other defensive problems.

Amazing entertainment. Some great goals. But just not good enough again.
